In an August follow-up, Testa clarified that bullying and hateful messages prompted her to make the video. The “X-rated” description referred to the explicit subscription content she promoted through Instagram—not to a separate incident.
Why was Mikaela Testa crying?
July 2019 coverage connected Testa’s distress to Instagram’s decision to hide like counts and the possible effect on her income. Testa described Instagram as an important way to attract people to her paid subscription content. She also said she had received hate comments following an earlier Facebook post.
In an interview published by news.com.au and republished by the NZ Herald on 24 July 2019, Testa described both factors: “When I posted the video online, I was very emotional,” she said. “There were lots of reasons why (I was upset), yes about the likes — but also about all of the hate comments I was receiving about my initial post.” NZ Herald’s republication of the interview records that mixed explanation.
What was the “X-rated” business?
Reports described Testa as using Instagram to promote a paid subscription page featuring explicit images and videos. In the July 2019 coverage, she said: “I run my own business, it’s a subscription website where I share provocative and raunchy photos and it makes me easy money.” That statement and the details about the business were attributed to Testa; they were not independently audited.

The articles also reported historical figures: PerthNow said Testa claimed income of $12,895 a month and US$45,000 over five months, while the NZ Herald republication reported a subscription price of US$20 per month. PerthNow and the NZ Herald also reported her claim that publicity brought 6,000 new followers. These are 2019 claims, not verified earnings, current prices, or present-day follower figures. PerthNow’s 25 July 2019 report and the NZ Herald republication give the contemporaneous accounts.
What did Testa say later about the video?
In an August 2019 follow-up, Testa put greater emphasis on the abuse she had received. As quoted by 7NEWS on 28 August, she said: “The video of me crying was created because of bullying and hateful messages I was receiving from the initial Facebook post that I wrote.” She also said troll comments across her posts had felt overwhelming. 7NEWS’s follow-up supplies that later clarification.

Did Testa say Instagram hid likes to hurt influencers?
Yes. Testa expressed the opinion that Instagram’s decision was intended to disadvantage influencers, saying, “I don’t believe Instagram has removed the likes for mental health.” That was her view, not evidence of Instagram’s motive. The cited reports do not establish why Instagram made the change.

The July accounts describe a combination of business anxiety and hostile comments; the later statement identifies bullying and hateful messages as the reason she made the crying video. These accounts need not be treated as mutually exclusive: one is the fuller contemporaneous explanation, and the other is Testa’s subsequent clarification. The episode belongs to 2019, and the reported financial and follower figures should be read as claims made at that time.
