Frigga persuaded Odin to spare Loki’s life, but not to release him. Her death later in the film deepens Loki’s grief and anger; it is not the reason he was imprisoned.
Why is Loki in prison at the beginning?
The timeline starts with The Avengers, not with an event in Thor: The Dark World. After Loki’s invasion of Earth, Thor returned him to Asgard. Odin considered Loki’s actions grave crimes and confined him in the dungeons. D23’s account of the story describes Thor escorting Loki back and Frigga intervening to save his life: D23’s history of Loki in the MCU.

Why didn’t Odin kill Loki?
Frigga was the reason Odin spared Loki’s life. Her intervention did not erase his sentence: Loki remained in the dungeon, separated from her and facing confinement. The distinction is important—Frigga secured mercy from execution, not freedom.
What does Frigga’s death have to do with Loki’s imprisonment?
It happens after Loki is already incarcerated. During the film’s prison escape, Kurse reaches Frigga while she is protecting Jane Foster. Marvel’s official Loki biography says Loki unknowingly helped the Dark Elf escape and was devastated by the news of Frigga’s death. That loss intensifies his grief and anger, but it does not explain the original sentence: Marvel’s on-screen Loki biography.

Does Loki stay imprisoned for the whole film?
No. The story does not end with Loki simply serving Odin’s sentence. Marvel’s biography summarizes the later reveal: Loki fakes his death and takes Odin’s place as ruler of Asgard. His apparent imprisonment is therefore an early part of the film’s plot, not his final status.
