What did Lucasfilm say about Carano’s departure?
Carano played Cara Dune in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian. On February 10, 2021, Lucasfilm said: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.” The company also said that “her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” The statements, quoted by the Associated Press, set out Lucasfilm’s public rationale at the time. What was the immediate controversy?
The post most closely associated with Lucasfilm’s decision compared being a Republican in the United States with being Jewish during the Holocaust. It drew condemnation for equating political disagreement with the persecution of Jews. Lucasfilm did not publicly identify a single post in its statement, but later court filings described the Holocaust comparison as the final straw in a broader dispute over Carano’s public statements.
In a July 2024 joint report to the court, Disney’s position was that Carano had made controversial public declarations on subjects including pandemic-related closure orders, vaccine mandates, the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election, and pronouns. Disney said her conduct distracted from and undermined its expressive work. That was the company’s account in the litigation, not a court finding about the decision-maker’s motives. What did Carano argue in her lawsuit?
Carano filed suit in California federal court on February 6, 2024. Her complaint alleged political retaliation under California law and sex discrimination. She argued that male actors had made controversial political posts without facing comparable consequences, and claimed Lucasfilm’s statements damaged her future work prospects. The dispute therefore involved two different explanations: Disney said Carano’s public conduct undermined its work and that the Holocaust comparison was the final straw; Carano said she was punished for political speech and treated differently because of her sex. In July 2024, the court denied Disney’s motion to dismiss, allowing the case to proceed at that stage. That procedural decision did not determine whether either side’s allegations were true. How did the lawsuit end, and is Carano returning?
Lucasfilm and Disney announced in August 2025 that they had reached an agreement with Carano to resolve the lawsuit. The Associated Press reported that the terms were not made public and that the parties stipulated to dismissal with prejudice; at the time of that report, a judge still needed formally to dismiss the case. Lucasfilm said it looked forward to identifying opportunities to work with Carano in the future. That statement does not confirm a new role, a return to The Mandalorian, or reinstatement. The settlement terms and any specific future project were not disclosed in the cited reporting.
