A filmmaker’s complaint over Amitabh Bachchan’s rendition of India’s national anthem before a 2016 India–Pakistan cricket match alleged that it ran longer than the government’s approximate 52-second reference. But reports disagreed on the claimed duration: one put it at 1 minute 10 seconds, while two others reported 1 minute 22 seconds. Neither figure is established here as a measurement of the performance.
What happened?
On March 21, 2016, filmmaker Ullhas PR reportedly filed a police complaint at New Ashok Nagar police station in east Delhi. It concerned Bachchan’s performance of the national anthem at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 19, before the India–Pakistan World T20 match. NDTV’s IANS report described the filing and quoted the complainant’s allegations.
What did the complaint allege?
Ullhas was quoted by NDTV/IANS as saying Bachchan sang the anthem in “1 minute 10 seconds while the mandatory time is 52 seconds.” The report also attributed to him an allegation that Bachchan used “Sindhu” in place of “Sindh.” These are allegations reported by the outlet, not findings about what was sung or how long the performance lasted.
Did he really sing it 30 seconds too long?
The reports do not agree on the duration attributed to the performance. NDTV/IANS reported Ullhas’s figure of 1 minute 10 seconds. Scroll and The Indian Express reported a claim of 1 minute 22 seconds. The estimates differ by 12 seconds, and the cited reports do not establish either as a timed measurement of the Eden Gardens recording.

The “30 seconds longer” framing comes from comparing the reported 1 minute 22 second allegation with the government’s approximate 52-second reference. It should not be read as an independently verified timing.
What does the official 52-second reference say?
The Ministry of Home Affairs information sheet says the full version of the anthem has a playing time of “approximately 52 seconds.” It prints the line as “Panjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha.” The document establishes the government’s approximate duration and its printed text; it does not establish the duration or wording of the performance at Eden Gardens. Read the MHA information sheet.

Was there a court finding or known outcome?
The available reports establish that a complaint was reported as filed, but do not establish a prosecution, judicial finding, or determination of guilt. They also do not establish what action police took or the complaint’s final disposition. It is therefore more accurate to call it a reported police complaint than a court case with a known outcome.

A January 18, 2018 Ministry of Home Affairs circular says the Supreme Court modified its November 30, 2016 direction so playing the anthem before feature films in cinemas was “not mandatory, but optional or directory.” It also addresses respect for the anthem on specified occasions under applicable executive orders and law. That later cinema guidance is separate from the 2016 complaint about a sports-event performance. Read the MHA circular.
