Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—as a thematic shorthand, Companion looks like a more adult counterpart to M3GAN: both put an artificial companion at the center of a horror story, but they explore different relationships. Companion is not a sequel or a shared-universe film. Its horror is rooted in adult companionship, rather than the child-and-caregiver dynamic in Blumhouse’s M3GAN.
What is Companion about?
Drew Hancock’s 2025 thriller-horror film follows a remote-cabin weekend that turns chaotic after a guest is revealed to be a subservient android built for human companionship. Apple’s US listing gives the film a 1-hour-37-minute runtime and names Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén and Rupert Friend among the cast. Apple TV’s US listing classifies it as thriller and horror.
For a spoiler-light introduction, that official premise is enough. The fuller relationship at the center of the film is best left for viewers to discover.
Why the M3GAN comparison fits—and where it stops
Blumhouse describes M3GAN as a lifelike doll designed to be “a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally.” Its official synopsis presents the doll as an artificial-intelligence creation that can listen, watch and learn. Companion, by contrast, begins with an android built for human companionship. The broad resemblance is the horror potential of an artificial companion; the relationships that shape that horror differ.

| Comparison | M3GAN | Companion |
|---|---|---|
| Companion’s stated role | A child’s companion and a parent’s ally, according to Blumhouse’s official description. | A subservient android built for human companionship, according to Apple’s US synopsis. |
| Relationship frame | Child and caregiver. | Adult companionship; further detail involves the central reveal. |
| What “grown-up” means here | A comparison of relationship dynamics and tone—not the android’s age, a continuity link, or an assertion that the plots are the same. | |
So “grown-up M3GAN” is a useful way to signal the broad appeal, not a precise description of the story. The films share a premise element, not a franchise or identical plot.
How much should you know before watching?
Spoilers ahead: The Associated Press review says Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is a robot companion whom Josh (Jack Quaid) can control, including the level of her intelligence. That detail clarifies how control shapes the relationship, but it gives away the central reveal. If you prefer to go in fresh, stop at the cabin-weekend premise.

Writing about the film for the Associated Press on January 28, 2025, Jocelyn Noveck called it “an exceedingly clever and entertaining sci-fi-horror-thriller-comedy.” That description captures why a simple M3GAN comparison only goes so far: Companion is presented as a genre blend, not just a robot-horror story. Noveck’s review also reports an R rating for strong violence, sexual content and language throughout. Read the Associated Press review.
