WWE’s 2006 feud between Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels reached its absurd peak at Backlash, where Michaels was billed as teaming with “God” against Vince and Shane McMahon. The storyline drew directly on Michaels’s Christian faith; the McMahons won after interference from the Spirit Squad, and Vince claimed he had beaten God. There is no objective ranking that makes it WWE’s “most ridiculous” rivalry, but its premise, personal target and payoff make a strong case for the description.
Why did Shawn Michaels wrestle “God”?
“God” was the billed storyline partner for Michaels at Backlash on April 30, 2006—not a person WWE described as physically wrestling in the ring. WWE’s own recap says the angle was built around Michaels’s “strong Christian beliefs.” The match itself was presented as Shawn Michaels and “God” against Vince and Shane McMahon, while Michaels was the wrestler actually facing them.
That distinction matters: the religious premise was part of the television story, while the physical contest involved the wrestlers in the ring. WWE’s recap records the McMahons’ victory after outside interference, not a literal victory over a supernatural opponent.
How did the feud build from WrestleMania 22 to Backlash?
Vince’s campaign against Michaels
WWE’s recap of the March 18, 2006, Saturday Night’s Main Event says Vince McMahon had spent months embarrassing Michaels. The stunts included a retirement party, forcing him into the “Kiss My Ass Club,” and a public drug test. Shane McMahon then defeated Michaels in a Street Fight after Vince interfered; the ending included a disputed submission sequence.

Michaels beats Vince at WrestleMania 22
On April 2, 2006, in Chicago, Michaels defeated Mr. McMahon in a No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 22. WWE’s recap describes Michaels choosing punishment rather than taking a quick finish. He used a ladder, a trash can and a table before ending the match with Sweet Chin Music.
WWE makes Michaels’s faith the Backlash premise
Rather than end the feud with that loss, WWE carried it into Backlash and made Michaels’s faith part of the storyline. In the build-up, Vince staged comic imitations of biblical miracles: walking on water, multiplying fish and bread, turning water into wine, and claiming to heal Candice’s chest cold. The match was billed as Michaels and “God” against Vince and Shane.

Did Vince McMahon beat God in WWE?
In the storyline’s billed terms, Vince claimed he had. In the match, the McMahons defeated Michaels after the Spirit Squad’s five members interfered. WWE’s recap says they put Michaels through a table, after which Vince pinned him. Vince then boasted, “I beat ‘God’.” The boast was the punchline to the angle; the documented finish was an interference-assisted pin over Michaels.
Why the rivalry earns the “most ridiculous” label
“Most ridiculous” is an opinion, not a published WWE ranking or a measurable historical distinction. The case rests on how unusually the feud combined four elements:

- Premise: Michaels was billed as teaming with “God” in a wrestling match.
- Personal target: WWE explicitly tied the story to Michaels’s publicly stated Christian faith.
- Escalation: The storyline moved from months of humiliation and Michaels’s WrestleMania win to a Backlash match framed around biblical parody.
- Payoff: The McMahons won after Spirit Squad interference, and Vince turned that result into the claim that he had beaten God.
Those features make the feud an especially conspicuous example of WWE’s willingness to turn a real performer’s public identity into an outlandish storyline premise. They support the description without pretending there is an objective ranking of every WWE rivalry.

In a WWE.com interview published August 9, 2006, about the reformed D-Generation X, Michaels said faith was important to him and distinguished his television character from his real-life self: “Even if people don’t want to recognize it, they have to have to understand that when I’m on TV, I’m someone else.” He also described trying to leave “a glimmer of my faith out there in everything.” That was Michaels’s account of how he viewed performing; it does not change the fact that WWE made his faith the premise of the Backlash angle.
