Why did Curry choose the role?
Gizmodo reported Curry’s explanation from remarks she made to The Hollywood Reporter: she connected with the character and believed an LGBTQIA community member playing someone hostile to that community could make the satire unmistakable. Curry said, “It sounds so gross to say, but I really connected with her right off the bat,” and explained the value of that casting with, “So there isn’t any ambiguity.”
That is Curry’s stated rationale for taking the role. It does not establish how every viewer will read the performance; the point she described was the opportunity to portray and satirize Firecracker from that perspective.

How does Curry approach playing a character she disagrees with?
Curry also said, “As an actor, our first job isn’t to judge our characters.” In that account, understanding a character for the performance is distinct from approving of her worldview. Playing Firecracker therefore should not be treated as an endorsement of the character’s anti-trans or homophobic rhetoric.
What is known about Firecracker’s perspective?
Gizmodo’s account says viewers may learn more about what drives Firecracker and describes her as someone who believes she has been marginalized. It does not provide a more detailed explanation of her history or motives, so her sense of marginalization should not be mistaken for a fuller backstory.
