A young Brisbane tree-lopper’s street interview turned an unexpected childhood story into its punchline: he said he once resented trees after falling from one, but now makes his living cutting them down—and says he has come to love and respect them.
What happened in the interview?
In a PerthNow report published on 11 August 2024, an unnamed young tree-lopper from Brisbane answers questions about his job and pay. The interviewer’s question, as quoted in the report, was: “you’re climbing trees and cutting them down?” The story is based on a street interview; it does not identify the interviewer or name the worker.
Why did he say he once hated trees?
The tree-lopper said that, as a child, he fell from a tree and “broke my back in four places.” He also said compression fractures reduced his height. According to PerthNow, he linked that experience to an earlier dislike of trees, joking that he was “getting me revenge” by working as a tree-lopper.
That is the interviewee’s account as reported by PerthNow, not independently verified medical information. The same report says he now loves and respects trees more, making the story less a simple tale of revenge than an unexpected change in how he feels about them.

What did he say about his pay?
Asked about his work and earnings, he said, “I’m a tree lopper; I’m only on $35 an hour at the moment.” He also described a week when, he said, he made $26,000 cash for one of his bosses. Both figures are remarks attributed to him in the interview, not independently verified pay information or a guide to what tree-loppers generally earn.
What was the tree-removal confrontation?
The interviewee also recounted an alleged confrontation at a tree-removal job, saying someone chained himself to a tree. In his account, another person knocked the protester out and dragged him onto the street. PerthNow’s report does not independently verify the anecdote; it is a secondary story within the interview, not evidence that violence is acceptable or typical of tree-removal work.
