Tyler, the Creator’s Cartier collection matters because it treats watches as objects to notice, wear and enjoy—not just expensive status symbols. Its reported mix of familiar Tank and Santos-Dumont designs with unusual vintage shapes such as the Crash, Pebble and Obus makes personal taste, rather than a single iconic model, the collection’s organizing idea.
What makes the collection distinctive?
The range of shapes is its clearest signature. GQ and Time+Tide have identified a warped Crash, a rotated-square Pebble, a square-bezel Obus, a curved Baignoire and rectangular Tank watches among Tyler’s reported Cartier pieces. The identifications come from published reporting and, in some cases, visual estimates—not an official inventory from Cartier or Tyler.
- Crash: A deliberately distorted case that looks familiar at first glance, then subtly wrong.
- Pebble: A rounded-square case turned diagonally, with Roman numerals, a minute track and blued-steel hands. GQ reported six examples in the original 1972 run and 150 additional examples released in 2022; those counts are GQ’s reporting, not a cited Cartier production record.
- Obus: A more obscure design with an unusual bezel and lugs. British GQ identified the example shown in the V&A’s Cartier exhibition as an Obus Quadrant, likely acquired at Monaco Legends in 2021; GQ’s description uses the broader Obus name. The labels should not be taken to mean every Obus is the same reference.
- Tank: A rectangular counterpoint to the stranger cases. GQ describes Tyler’s gold Tank Louis Cartier with Roman numerals, a sapphire cabochon crown, leather strap and an apparent date window. That configuration does not appear to match a current collection reference, so the exact watch should not be treated as a current retail model.
Time+Tide also discusses reported Santos-Dumont, Baignoire, Must de Cartier Tank, Coulissant/Baguette and Petit Cylindre examples. Some reference numbers and dates in that account are visual estimates. GQ has also reported a Louis Vuitton Monterey II and a possible Cartier Duoplan sighting, the latter explicitly uncertain; neither changes the collection’s Cartier focus.
Why do the unusual designs fit Tyler’s taste?
Tyler has described choosing watches partly by how light they feel and whether they can be colorful. In an interview with Robb Report, reproduced by GQ, he said: “I based a lot of my watch taste just off of how light it feels and how it could be colorful, too.” He has also described the pleasure the Cartiers bring him.

That preference helps explain why the collection is not simply a checklist of famous models. The Tank provides a recognizable classic shape, while pieces such as the Pebble and Obus reward a closer look. Tyler’s description of the Crash captures the appeal: “I love these things that are regular, but kind of skewed.” The case is still recognizably a watch, but its distortion turns a familiar object into something less predictable.
The contrast between classic and eccentric is more revealing than rarity alone. A collection built around only unusual pieces could make strangeness its own status marker. The reported variety instead suggests an eye for how different forms sit on the wrist and how they catch attention.

What does the Obus add to Cartier’s story?
The Obus matters because it broadens the picture of Cartier beyond the models most people already know. British GQ reported that Tyler’s Obus Quadrant appeared in the V&A’s Cartier exhibition, which the article described as containing 350 designs. That exhibition closed on November 16, 2025, so it is historical context, not a current event listing.
Exhibition co-curator Rachel Garrahan explained the choice: “It’s more unexpected. We have a Crash, a Santos and a Tank, and so many other classic Cartier watches. It was really nice that this was a watch that isn’t represented otherwise.” The point is not that the Obus replaces Cartier’s better-known designs, but that it gives the brand’s history a less familiar edge—and that Tyler’s collecting brings attention to a piece that might otherwise be overlooked.

Does the collection show that Tyler changed watch culture?
It is fair to say that his watches helped bring Cartier and watch collecting into conversations beyond traditional enthusiast circles. The Los Angeles Times quoted Thom Bettridge, SSENSE’s head of creative and content, saying: “His watch collection has brought watches into a new conversation with people who didn’t really care about watches.” That is an attributed cultural assessment, not a measured sales result.
The reporting does not establish a statistic showing that Tyler caused higher Cartier sales or a specific increase in watch-market demand. His significance is better understood as visibility: a prominent artist wearing and discussing watches can give people a reason to notice the design, even if the size of that effect is not quantified.

Why does wearing the watches matter more than preserving them?
Coverage of rare watches can make collecting sound like a contest in scarcity, condition and resale value. Tyler offers a different emphasis. Robb Report describes a Crash he wore with visible wear and sweat marks, and quotes him explaining why he does not keep purchases untouched: “I’m not spending all this money on these things that I claim I like and not enjoying them.”
That attitude gives the collection a practical point beyond its unusual inventory. A watch can be historically rare and still be something its owner puts on. The appeal, in Tyler’s account, is in living with the object—not simply owning a pristine example or treating it as an investment.

How should readers identify the watches?
Published watch identifications are useful guides, but they are not a verified catalogue. GQ and Time+Tide identify several pieces from appearances and images; Time+Tide notes that some reference details are estimates, and GQ describes the possible Duoplan sighting as uncertain. For the Tank Louis, GQ’s description of an apparent date window is a visual identification, not proof of an exact current model.
For a reader asking “what Cartier watch is Tyler wearing?”, start with the visible shape and the context of the photograph or video: a distorted case points toward the Crash, a diagonally rotated rounded square toward the Pebble, and a rectangular case toward the Tank family. Treat those as clues, not definitive reference identification. Cartier has not provided a public, exact inventory of Tyler’s collection in the reporting cited here.
