Tom Cruise received the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award on 17 December 2024. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro presented the honor at Longcross Studios near London. The Navy said Cruise’s film work helped raise public awareness and appreciation of Navy and Marine Corps personnel and their sacrifices.
What award did Tom Cruise receive?
The award’s formal name is the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service Award, often abbreviated DPS. The Navy describes it as the highest honor the Secretary of the Navy can bestow on a civilian outside the Department of the Navy. The Navy’s announcement identifies Cruise as the recipient.

This is a civilian public-service honor, not a military award that makes its recipient a member of the Navy. Its name is also distinct from similarly named awards for service within the department.
Why did the Navy recognize Cruise?
The Navy said it honored Cruise for his dedication and outstanding contributions to the Navy and Marine Corps. Its announcement credited his film-industry efforts with increasing public awareness and appreciation of service members and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.

In its account of the ceremony, the Associated Press reported that the Navy connected Top Gun: Maverick with renewed interest in the Navy among older and newer audiences, including younger people interested in Navy skills and opportunities. AP also reported that Cruise was commended for roles in Top Gun, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men and the Mission: Impossible films. These are the Navy’s stated reasons and reported audience effects, not a quantified finding that Cruise’s films caused a particular increase in enlistment. AP’s report mentions renewed enlistment interest associated with the 1986 Top Gun and recruitment tables at theaters, but gives no numerical figure or underlying dataset.
When and where was the award presented?
Del Toro presented the award to Cruise on Tuesday, 17 December 2024, at Longcross Studios near London. The Navy’s announcement and AP’s report are both dated that day.

How does this relate to Cruise’s honorary naval aviator title?
Cruise was already the Navy’s 36th Honorary Naval Aviator, according to the Navy’s 2024 announcement. That honorary designation and the Distinguished Public Service Award are separate recognitions; receiving the latter did not make Cruise a Navy aviator or service member.
