The joke worked because O’Leary was also a co-star in the film.
What Chalamet said about “Mr. Wonderful”
While thanking the cast of Marty Supreme, Chalamet singled out Kevin O’Leary and joked that his 19-year-old self would have been stunned to find himself thanking “Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank.” He then thanked O’Leary directly. The Golden Globes’ official acceptance clip is the primary source for the moment. Elle’s transcript also reproduces the passage, though its spelling and punctuation differ from standard styling; the clip provides the clearest way to hear the wording.

Why Kevin O’Leary was part of the speech
O’Leary was not simply a television personality Chalamet spotted in the audience: he appeared alongside Chalamet in Marty Supreme. Variety identifies O’Leary as Chalamet’s co-star, while TIME connects his familiar “Mr. Wonderful” identity to Shark Tank. The reference therefore acknowledged both a fellow cast member and O’Leary’s recognizable TV persona.
What Chalamet won—and the rest of the speech
At the January 11, 2026 ceremony, Chalamet won Best Male Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy for Marty Supreme. The Golden Globes event and award listing records the category and win; the organization’s film page for Marty Supreme also records the 2026 award.

The O’Leary joke was one moment in a broader acceptance speech. Chalamet thanked the film’s collaborators, including director and co-writer Josh Safdie, co-writer Ronnie Bronstein, and cast members. He also reflected on earlier ceremonies where he had left without an award and on gratitude, saying his father had taught him to appreciate what he had. The Associated Press independently reported on that theme and Chalamet’s previous losses.
