The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, and director Trey Edward Shults have said that viewers can take the film at face value or revisit it to look for deeper meaning. “Intentionally mysterious” is a fair description of their remarks, not a direct quote from Tesfaye.
What The Weeknd and Trey Edward Shults said about the film’s mystery
In a May 6, 2025 interview with The FADER, Tesfaye described two ways to approach the story: “It’s either this linear story that is entertaining, [but] if you watch a few more times, you can pick up on what you’re saying.” He added that Shults had written the deeper interpretive layer into the script.

Shults framed that layer as an option rather than a requirement: “If you want to take [the movie] at face value, you can, or there’s a way deeper, richer Jungian psychological dream analysis thing going on–” He said he wanted to make a film people could revisit and interpret differently, drawing on his experience watching Ingmar Bergman’s Persona.
That distinction matters: the filmmakers have not offered one definitive explanation that viewers must decode. The movie can be followed as a story on its surface, while its imagery and psychology leave room for other readings.

Why repeat viewings may change how the story feels
Tesfaye’s point is that a second or later viewing may make the film’s underlying interpretation more visible. Shults’s description of a “Jungian psychological dream analysis” suggests a lens for considering the film’s symbolism and inner conflicts, not a checklist of clues with a single confirmed answer.
In a separate interview with W Magazine, Tesfaye called the movie “definitely a conversation piece.” Shults said a section plays with whether something is dream or reality, and described “a lot of deeper symbolism and psychology going on.” Together, those comments position uncertainty as part of the viewing experience: the movie invites discussion rather than closing off interpretation.

How the real-life voice-loss incident relates to the fiction
The premise draws on a real event in 2022, when Tesfaye had to end a California performance after suddenly being unable to sing. The FADER describes the film’s character as a fictionalized version of Tesfaye who enters a mental tailspin after losing his voice onstage. That real incident is an autobiographical seed, not evidence that the film recounts the event as a documentary or factual account.
The film follows an insomnia-affected musician drawn into an odyssey with a stranger, according to Apple TV’s US catalog. Its story premise gives viewers a concrete path through the film even as its dreamlike elements complicate what is happening and what it means.

How the film connects to the album
Hurry Up Tomorrow is a companion piece to Tesfaye’s 2025 album of the same name, as reported by both The FADER and the Associated Press. The film therefore sits alongside the album as part of the same creative project, while still presenting its own narrative and interpretive questions.
