Marlon Wayans says he and his brothers left the Scary Movie franchise after rejecting what they considered inadequate terms for a third film. He has also said they learned that Scary Movie 3 was moving ahead from a New Year’s Eve announcement. Claims that their idea was used or that they were denied royalties are allegations by Wayans; the sources cited here do not establish the contract terms or a legal finding.
What the Wayans brothers did on the first two films
Scary Movie (2000) and Scary Movie 2 (2001) were released through Dimension Films, then a Miramax subsidiary. Keenen Ivory Wayans directed both; Marlon and Shawn Wayans co-wrote and starred in them. The first film grossed $278 million worldwide on a $19 million budget, and the second brought in $141 million on a $45 million budget, according to Variety.
Why did the Wayans brothers leave Scary Movie?
According to Marlon Wayans, the brothers asked for a raise to make a third film after the success of the first two, but the offer was too low for them to accept. In a GQ interview published May 26, 2026, he said the studio did not want to make the deal or pay for the jokes, so the family walked away and pursued other projects.
Wayans also recalled that the brothers did not know the third film was proceeding until they saw a New Year’s Eve announcement. “The franchise was stripped from us,” he told Variety, describing their position as a request for a fair share. That account is his recollection; the reporting does not independently confirm how or when the announcement reached them.

What is alleged—and what is established
Wayans has alleged that the studio used the brothers’ idea for the third film and that they were not paid royalties from the first two. Those claims help explain why he described the break as a dispute over both money and creative contribution, but they should not be presented as proven facts: the sources cited here do not establish the relevant contract terms, a court ruling, or a final amount owed.
His account also suggests the family chose not to pursue a lawsuit. In the GQ interview, Wayans said they “probably could have sued” but decided to move on. He has described the earlier business relationship as toxic, while saying the family did not want to hold grudges.
Why the Wayans family returned
Miramax later approached the brothers about a revival. Variety reported that then-Miramax chief Jonathan Glickman wanted them involved and that the new deal gave them more equity. Glickman said the earlier deal did not reflect their success as creator-directors-stars, and argued that original creative involvement lends a revival legitimacy.
Miramax’s official About page identifies Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans as writers and producers on the 2026 Scary Movie. Marlon has said he would not return without his brothers. Their reunion therefore reflects renewed terms and the family’s willingness to work together—not proof that the earlier dispute never happened.

Where the Wayans brothers fit in the series
The original pair are the films most directly connected to the brothers’ work: Keenen directed, while Marlon and Shawn co-wrote and starred. The later installments, Scary Movie 3, Scary Movie 4, and Scary Movie 5, were made without them, according to JustWatch. The 2026 film brought the three brothers back as writers and producers; Miramax reported it had earned more than $230 million internationally.
