Dobrev and Wesley played Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore, whose romance was central to The Vampire Diaries. In comments from a 2019 podcast appearance, as reported by TV Insider, Dobrev recalled that viewers often asked whether she and Wesley were together in real life because they thought the pair had strong chemistry on screen.

That was an inference from their performances, not confirmation of an off-screen relationship. The distinction matters: actors can convincingly portray a romance without being a couple away from the set.
What Dobrev said about their early relationship
Dobrev said she respected Wesley but did not like him at first, and described their first five months of filming as a period when they did not get along. She later joked that the line between love and hate can be fine, suggesting that their friction may have read as passion to viewers.

“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show.”
TV Insider reported that statement from Dobrev’s 2019 comments. She also recalled a moment when they connected and their relationship began to change. Her account describes an evolving workplace relationship; it does not establish that either actor rejected a romantic relationship or identify one specific reason they never dated.
How their relationship changed
Dobrev said Wesley predicted they would appreciate their time together after the show. She recalled that he was right and described him as one of her best friends. In a 2021 WIRED Autocomplete Interview, she also described them as friends, spoke warmly about his wife, and said she saw him often at that time.
Wesley later called Dobrev’s account of their early friction “absolutely true,” according to Entertainment Tonight, which also covered the pair’s public joking about it. That corroborates the broad outline of the story, while the details of the early dynamic remain Dobrev’s account.

Did Dobrev date someone else from the show?
Yes, Dobrev said in the 2021 WIRED interview that she had dated someone from The Vampire Diaries, but she did not identify that person in the answer. That statement is not evidence that she dated Wesley.
Us Weekly reported that Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder dated from 2011 to 2013. Somerhalder was another cast member, so the reported relationship helps explain how Dobrev could truthfully answer that she had dated someone from the show without naming Wesley.
What the available accounts do—and do not—show
- They show: Dobrev said audience assumptions grew from the perceived chemistry between Elena and Stefan, while she and Wesley initially struggled to get along.
- They show: Dobrev later described a close friendship, and her 2021 comments also described them as friends at that time.
- They do not show: that Dobrev and Wesley dated, or a definitive private explanation for why they did not become a couple.
The clearest answer is therefore limited but useful: the available accounts distinguish the characters’ fictional romance from the actors’ off-screen history. Dobrev attributed the dating speculation to viewers’ perception of their on-screen chemistry, then described early friction giving way to friendship.
