The phrase “hottest horror movie” was a playful claim about its influence: two films arriving that summer, Longlegs and Trap, invited comparisons to the 1991 thriller. The point was how powerfully the earlier film still shaped stories about investigators pursuing killers.
Why call a 1991 film the hottest horror movie of summer 2024?
The phrase comes from Cheryl Eddy’s July 4, 2024 io9/Gizmodo article, which treated The Silence of the Lambs as the season’s defining horror reference—not as a current release or a ranking based on ticket sales. Its enduring setup is stark: a young FBI agent seeks help from one brutal killer to catch another. The film’s influence, Eddy argued, had spread through crime television, horror stories and true-crime culture. Read Eddy’s article.
The comparison became timely because Longlegs and Trap were both due in the summer of 2024. Each placed a killer and law enforcement at the center of its premise, giving critics and audiences a familiar framework for discussing the older film’s legacy.
How does Longlegs connect to The Silence of the Lambs?
Longlegs director Osgood Perkins directly acknowledged the connection, calling The Silence of the Lambs a “hugely impactful movie” and describing Longlegs as having “a deliberate one for one relationship” with it, as quoted in Eddy’s article. The parallels she identifies include an inexperienced but talented FBI agent, the involvement of her boss, an elusive murderer, nightmarish methods and a 1990s setting.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That is a statement about influence and deliberate correspondence, not a claim that the films are interchangeable. Eddy’s article also emphasizes that Longlegs is its own movie.
What was the Trap comparison—and what was still unknown?
Before Trap reached theaters, M. Night Shyamalan pitched it with the question: “What if Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?” Eddy connected that line to Josh Hartnett’s character, a serial killer nicknamed “the Butcher,” and the law-enforcement hunt.

Because the article appeared July 4, 2024, before Trap’s planned August 2 release, its description of the film’s relationship to The Silence of the Lambs was necessarily provisional. The quoted pitch is a hook, not a complete account of Trap’s plot; the article leaves the extent of the homage unresolved. It likewise described Longlegs as due July 12, 2024—historical release-context details, not current listings.
The legacy and the criticism belong in the same conversation
The Silence of the Lambs remains a landmark of investigator-versus-killer storytelling, but its cultural reach does not make every element of its portrayal beyond criticism. Eddy notes that LGBTQ groups questioned the depiction of Buffalo Bill at the time and that contemporary viewers may identify aspects of the screenplay that warrant greater sensitivity.

That is the article’s account and interpretation, not a comprehensive history of LGBTQ reception. The useful distinction is that a film can be influential and formally compelling while also inviting scrutiny of how it represents marginalized people.

The screen universe also includes the television series Hannibal and Clarice. These works draw on Thomas Harris’s book series, the literary foundation for the characters and stories. The July 2024 article noted that The Silence of the Lambs was streaming on Prime Video at that time; that dated mention does not establish where the film can be watched now.
