Two well-documented episodes—the public response to a Maui wildfire fundraiser and Johnson’s changed approach to political endorsements—help explain why some people have questioned his public image. Neither proves anything definitive about his private character, and the available reporting does not substantiate 20 separate failings.
What the documented criticism is—and is not
A fair account separates verifiable events from conclusions about personality. The episodes below show that Johnson’s public choices have drawn criticism and that he has responded to it. They do not establish that he is secretly unkind, dishonest, or acting a part in his personal life. Online reaction, a celebrity’s public image, and a documented character finding are not interchangeable.
That distinction matters especially with Johnson, whose career spans scripted professional wrestling, film, and real corporate roles. A performed persona or a storyline is not independent evidence about private conduct.
The Maui fundraiser: a charitable appeal that drew backlash
What happened
After the Maui wildfires, Oprah Winfrey and Johnson launched the People’s Fund of Maui. Vanity Fair reported that each contributed $5 million at launch. That figure describes their reported contributions; it is not the fund’s total fundraising or a financial accounting of its subsequent activity. Vanity Fair’s October 2023 report covered the launch and the public reaction.

Why people objected
The request for donations from the public prompted criticism that wealthy public figures should contribute more themselves rather than ask others for money. That is a criticism of the appeal and its optics, not evidence that donations were misused. The sources cited here do not establish misuse or provide independent financial records from which to assess the fund’s results.
Johnson’s response and what it establishes
Johnson later acknowledged the backlash and said he understood why people were angry. The Los Angeles Times reported on his response, and Vanity Fair also covered it. His acknowledgment is relevant context, but it does not settle whether the original appeal was well judged or establish a broader verdict about his character.

Political endorsements: a change in public positioning
From endorsing Biden to declining to do so again
Johnson endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 election. In an interview reported by The Guardian on April 5, 2024, he said he would not repeat that endorsement. He pointed to the division that followed his earlier political involvement.
What the change does—and does not—show
It is reasonable to scrutinize the change or to disagree with his explanation. But the documented facts establish a shift in his public stance, not an undisclosed motive. The Guardian also reported that Johnson said in 2021 that serving as president would be an honour. That public comment was not a firm commitment to run for office.

Why WWE storylines are not evidence about his private character
Johnson’s wrestling persona is part of a scripted entertainment format in which performers may play villains, or “heels,” and storylines can deliberately blur fiction and real-world developments. WWE’s official biography documents his wrestling career and 2024 return. Separately, Johnson joined the board of TKO Group Holdings, WWE’s parent company. A 2024 TheWrap article discussed how his real board position and on-screen conflict could overlap in public presentation.
Those overlapping roles can make a storyline look like a personal dispute, but a performed heel role is not proof of real-world behavior. Corporate developments should likewise be assessed through company disclosures, not treated as clues to character. The SEC filing exhibit for TKO Group Holdings is a source for company and filing context, not a basis for inferring Johnson’s private personality.

How to read claims about “the real Rock”
- Look for a specific, attributable event. A concrete report is more informative than a general claim that a celebrity is “fake” or “not nice.”
- Separate criticism from proof. A public backlash shows that people objected; by itself, it does not verify every accusation or establish motive.
- Include the response. Johnson’s comments about the Maui backlash and his explanation for not repeating the Biden endorsement are part of the public record.
- Keep performance and business in their lanes. Wrestling storylines are entertainment; board and corporate matters call for documentary evidence.
- Treat autobiography as first-person perspective. The Associated Press noted Johnson’s autobiography, The Rock Says, in its January 2024 report. It can offer his account of his life and career, but it is not independent verification of contested claims.
Why a list of 20 reasons would overstate the evidence
The two controversies described here can support a focused discussion of public perception: the Maui appeal attracted criticism, and Johnson later chose not to make another presidential endorsement after the division he said followed the previous one. They cannot responsibly be stretched into 20 distinct character failings. The cited reporting does not substantiate that count or justify a definitive judgment about who Johnson is in private.
