But a new chapter for the character does not automatically make a new performance feel like the same Sean. Mika Amonsen’s casting is understandable; the transition, so far, risks weakening the continuity that gave the father-son story its emotional weight.
Who plays Sean Reagan in Boston Blue?
Andrew Terraciano played Sean Reagan throughout Blue Bloods. In its follow-up, Boston Blue, Mika Amonsen takes over the role. Sean is Danny Reagan’s son, and the new series moves their story to Boston: Sean is a patrolman with the Boston Police Department, while Danny works with detective Lena.
CBS’s reported setup gives Sean a reason to choose a department away from home: he wants to carry on the family law-enforcement legacy on his own terms. Danny, meanwhile, remains in Boston and has an opportunity to reconnect with his son. That premise creates a useful change in their relationship, but it also puts more weight on the audience recognizing Sean across the recast.
Why did Boston Blue recast Sean?
Co-showrunner Brandon Margolis connected the casting change to the characters’ new stage of life. In an interview reported by TVLine from Variety in October 2025, he said: “It felt like there was an organic opportunity to bring in a new performance with a new energy, to help dramatize that change.”

Margolis also told Us Weekly: “We love Andrew and the work he did over the years on Blue Bloods. Really, it came down to we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives.” The explanation is coherent: Sean is no longer simply Danny’s son at home, but a young officer making choices in a new city. It does not, by itself, resolve the harder dramatic question of whether Amonsen’s Sean feels like a continuation of Terraciano’s.
Why the new performance can feel like a break in continuity
A new stage still needs a recognizable character
A recast can make a character feel older, more independent, or newly tested. The challenge is preserving the traits that make the character legible while allowing those changes to register. Terraciano’s Sean accumulated meaning across years of family stories; viewers did not encounter him as a blank slate. If the new portrayal emphasizes the reset more than the accumulated history, the change can feel less like Sean growing up and more like the series introducing someone new with the same name.

The father-son story needs more than shared backstory
Boston Blue places Danny and Sean in a position to reconnect, which should make their history an active part of the drama rather than an item of biography. The most convincing test is whether their exchanges carry the familiarity, friction, and affection of a relationship shaped over time. A new actor can make that history feel different, but the writing has to give the audience specific moments that bridge the performances. Without that bridge, the recast can make the emotional premise harder to feel.
Sean’s police work could help establish the new version
Sean’s choice to join an out-of-town department offers a strong way to distinguish this chapter: he is taking up the family vocation while trying to define it for himself. That gives Amonsen material for a Sean who is more than a younger echo of Danny. The role will land best when the show lets the character’s decisions, judgment, and relationship with his father reveal what has changed—and what has not.

Does the recast work for viewers?
There is no representative audience poll or study in the cited coverage establishing whether viewers broadly accept the recast. Amonsen told Us Weekly, “There’s been some negativity, for sure,” while also describing supportive responses. That is evidence of mixed online reaction, not a measure of overall audience opinion.
Nor do the available audience figures answer the casting question. CinemaBlend reported in December 2025 that CBS cited an average of 8 million Live+7 multiplatform viewers at that point in Boston Blue’s first season. The same report said streaming for Blue Bloods rose 87% in fall 2024. The first figure concerns the series’ reach; the second describes a streaming increase. Neither indicates approval of Amonsen’s performance or the recast.

What to watch for in Season 2
As reported by TV Insider on September 30, 2026, Season 2 is scheduled to premiere October 9, 2026, on CBS. The report also noted that Sean’s brother Jack did not appear in Season 1 and quoted co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier saying Jack could be addressed in the second season. That family context could give the series more ways to show Sean as part of the Reagan family rather than only as Danny’s colleague-in-training or estranged son.
The recast is not inherently a mistake, and Margolis’s reasoning makes sense on paper. The criticism is that a casting change meant to signal a new chapter still has to preserve the character’s emotional continuity. Until the show makes that continuity persuasive on screen, Amonsen’s Sean can feel more like a reset than a natural next step.
