The “magic bullet theory” is the critical nickname for the Warren Commission’s explanation that one bullet passed through President John F. Kennedy and then caused Governor John Connally’s wounds. The dispute persists because that explanation asks readers to reconcile the men’s wounds, their positions and movements, the bullet’s condition, and the available timing. The Warren Commission and a later House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) review reported expert assessments supporting the account, but the HSCA pathology panel had one dissenter. Those findings are best understood as conclusions of particular official reviews—not as proof that every question or disagreement disappeared.
What the Warren Commission meant by the single-bullet explanation
The Warren Commission proposed that a bullet entered Kennedy’s back, exited through his throat, and continued into Connally, causing wounds to the governor’s back, chest, wrist, and thigh. It argued that the wound evidence and the limousine’s location supported shots from above and behind.
The Commission summarized its position this way: “Although it is not necessary to any essential findings of the Commission to determine just which shot hit Governor Connally, there is very persuasive evidence from the experts to indicate that the same bullet which pierced the President’s throat also caused the Governor’s wounds.” In other words, it regarded the same-bullet account as strongly supported, but did not make identifying Connally’s particular shot essential to its central findings. —Warren Commission Report, Chapter 1 (1964)
This was an inference drawn from multiple kinds of evidence, not a bullet path filmed or witnessed from beginning to end. The Commission said it considered eyewitness accounts, limousine damage, rifle and cartridge-case evidence, fragments recovered from the limousine and Parkland Hospital, the men’s wounds, ballistics tests, clothing, and films and photographs.

Why the account became controversial
The nickname “magic bullet” expresses skepticism about a single bullet apparently passing through two men and causing several wounds. The core disagreement is not resolved by the nickname itself: it turns on whether the proposed route and the bullet’s condition can be reconciled with the available physical and medical evidence.
Wound locations and the proposed path
Readers question whether the locations and angles of the wounds can be aligned along the proposed route. The men’s positions and movements, as well as the limousine’s position, matter to any reconstruction. The HSCA report notes that its trajectory analysis depended on selected wound reference points and on the positions of the men and the car. That qualification matters: a trajectory analysis is an interpretation built from chosen points and spatial assumptions, not a direct recording of the bullet’s full path.

The bullet’s condition and ballistics
The bullet’s condition is another reason the account attracts scrutiny. The Warren Commission discussed the bullet’s velocity and effect after passing through tissue, and conducted tests using simulated materials. The HSCA later reported that its wound-ballistics expert concluded stretcher bullet CE 399 could have caused the wounds attributed to Kennedy and Connally without showing more deformation than it did. That is an expert assessment reported by the committee; it does not, by itself, settle every question about the sequence of events.
What fragments can and cannot establish
The HSCA reported that neutron activation analysis supported evidence of only two bullets among fragments recovered from the limousine and its occupants. That finding concerns the fragments examined. It should not be stretched into proof of every part of the single-bullet trajectory or treated as a substitute for the medical and trajectory analyses.

How the Warren Commission and HSCA reviews compare
| Question | Warren Commission (1964) | HSCA (1979) |
|---|---|---|
| What did the body assess? | The Commission said it considered testimony, physical evidence, wounds, ballistics, clothing, films, and photographs. | The findings discussed ballistics, fragment analysis, medical evidence, and trajectory analysis. |
| What did it report about the bullet? | It described expert evidence for the same-bullet account as “very persuasive” and discussed simulated-material tests, velocity, and tissue effects. | Its wound-ballistics expert said CE 399 could have caused the attributed wounds without more deformation than observed. Its neutron activation analysis supported evidence of only two bullets among the recovered fragments. |
| What did it report about medical evidence? | It proposed that the bullet exiting Kennedy’s throat caused Connally’s back, chest, wrist, and thigh wounds. | Its forensic pathology panel said the medical evidence was consistent with a single bullet causing both men’s wounds. |
| Was the conclusion qualified? | The Commission said identifying which shot hit Connally was not necessary to its essential findings. | One member of the pathology panel dissented; the panel’s conclusion was not unanimous. |
The later HSCA assessment is significant because it reported expert findings consistent with the single-bullet hypothesis. It is not a claim that every later analyst agreed, that the two reports used identical methods, or that the HSCA resolved every criticism. The panel’s dissent is part of the record and should be included when describing its conclusion.

The careful answer is that the official reviews cited here concluded that the account was compatible with evidence they assessed. The Warren Commission called the expert evidence persuasive; the HSCA reported that its ballistics expert considered CE 399 capable of causing the attributed wounds without additional deformation, and that its pathology panel found the hypothesis consistent with the medical evidence, with one dissenter.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Those are attributed findings, not a universal consensus or a reason to treat the nickname as a verdict. The controversy endures because people weigh the wound locations, positions, trajectory assumptions, and bullet evidence differently—and because no single finding should be asked to establish more than the report says it does.
