The mental-health version of the Ice Bucket Challenge began in spring 2025 with the University of South Carolina’s MIND Club, which adapted the viral format as the #SpeakYourMIND Challenge. It invited people to talk about mental health and support young people through donations to Active Minds. The ALS Association later joined the effort, framing it as a way to honor the original ALS campaign while bringing attention to a different cause.
Why the challenge came back for mental health
The 2025 revival was started by the University of South Carolina’s MIND Club—short for Mental Illness Needs Discussion. Student founder Wade Jefferson and the club repurposed a familiar social-media challenge to encourage mental-health conversations, reduce stigma and raise support for youth and young adults. Active Minds, a nonprofit focused on mental health, was the named donation recipient. Active Minds’ campaign announcement describes the launch and its purpose.
The format was recognizable, but the cause was not the same as the original. In May 2025, the ALS Association and Active Minds publicly collaborated on ALS and mental-health awareness. Their framing acknowledged the Ice Bucket Challenge’s ALS roots while making space for mental health as a separate issue. Alison Malmon, Active Minds’ founder and executive director, called the effort “a symbol of solidarity across movements.” ALS Association president and CEO Calaneet Balas described the original challenge as a cultural phenomenon that changed the fight against ALS. Both comments were made in the context of the May collaboration. The organizations’ joint statement explains that partnership.
What participants were asked to do
The campaign used the name #SpeakYourMIND and paired the bucket-and-ice video with a call to pass the challenge along and share resources.

The view total is a reported count of video views, not unique people. These are figures reported by Active Minds, not an independent count. The organization had announced an earlier milestone of more than $400,000 in May 2025; that earlier update and the later annual-report total refer to different points in the campaign. Active Minds’ 2025 impact report gives the later figures.
Is the challenge still supporting ALS?
The 2025 mental-health adaptation named Active Minds as the recipient of donations. The May collaboration with the ALS Association connected the campaigns through shared awareness and the original challenge’s legacy; it did not make mental health and ALS interchangeable causes. The ALS Association says the original Ice Bucket Challenge raised $115 million for the association and was followed by another $1 billion in ALS research funding. Those figures describe the association’s account of the original campaign’s legacy, not money raised by the 2025 mental-health version. The ALS Association’s account of the challenge’s legacy provides that attribution.

A separate ALS-focused revival followed in 2026
The mental-health campaign should not be confused with a later return of the challenge for ALS. In July 2026, the ALS Association reported a separate ALS-focused revival after former NFL player Chris Johnson disclosed his ALS diagnosis and called for the challenge to return. That wave had a different prompt and cause from the USC MIND Club’s spring 2025 #SpeakYourMIND campaign. The ALS Association’s 2026 update describes the later appeal.

Views, donors and fundraising indicate the campaign’s reach and activity. They do not establish that the challenge improved mental health, reduced stigma in measurable terms or prevented suicide. The organizations described those as aims; the campaign figures do not report a clinical outcome evaluation. Anyone seeking help should use qualified mental-health or crisis resources rather than treating a viral challenge as care.
