Last Man Standing did not have one mass cast exit or one reason for every change. Some roles were recast during the ABC run; others changed after the show moved to Fox. Here is what was publicly reported about each shift—and what remains unknown.
Why did the cast of Last Man Standing change?
The answer depends on the character and the point in the series. ABC aired the sitcom for six seasons, then Fox revived it for Season 7. That cancellation gap helps explain the changes to Mandy and Boyd, but it does not account for earlier recasts such as Kristin’s. ABC’s series page provides show and cast context; TVLine and Fox News reported the casting changes and attributed explanations below.

Why did they replace Mandy on Last Man Standing?
Molly Ephraim did not return as Mandy when Fox revived the series. Matt Berry, an executive producer, said that after cancellation Ephraim “got involved in some different things, so when [Last Man Standing] came back, she was not able to do it.” Fox cast Molly McCook in the role.
Berry also described the production’s initial concern about McCook’s physical fit for the part, then said the team chose her because she was the best actress for the role. That comment explains how the casting choice was made, not why Ephraim was unavailable. McCook later acknowledged that some viewers initially struggled with the change, while saying the supportive audience members stood out to her. TVLine on McCook and audience reaction

Why was Boyd recast twice?
The change after Season 1
Boyd was played by twins Evan and Luke Kruntchev in Season 1, then by Flynn Morrison beginning in Season 2. The available cast-change reporting records the sequence but does not establish why the twins were replaced. It would be speculation to assign them a specific reason.
The Fox revival
For Season 7, the production replaced Morrison with Jet Jurgensmeyer and made Boyd older. Abbott said the creative aim was to bring the character back at 12 and tell stories about a young man on the cusp of adulthood. That is the producers’ stated rationale for the character change; it does not establish Morrison’s personal reason for not returning.

What about Kristin, Ryan, Carol, and Eve?
Kristin: Krosney to Fuller
Before Season 2, Alexandra Krosney left the role of Kristin and Amanda Fuller took over. TVLine described Krosney as having been let go for “creative reasons.” The reporting does not explain those reasons more specifically, so claims about a particular dispute or personal motive are not established.
Ryan: Jonas to Masterson
Nick Jonas originated Ryan in a Season 1 episode. When Ryan became a regular in Season 2, Jordan Masterson played him. The cited cast roundup reports the change without giving a further explanation.

Carol: Alexander to Campbell
Tisha Campbell took over as Carol Larabee from Erika Alexander in Season 7. The cited report does not say why Alexander’s role was recast, so no personal or contractual explanation can be confirmed from it.
Eve: a recurring role
Kaitlyn Dever remained part of the Fox-era show in a recurring capacity instead of continuing with the same full-time status. In 2018, TVLine connected the change to Dever’s work on Netflix’s Unbelievable and reported that she was negotiating to return when scheduling permitted. That account describes the situation at the time of the revival.

What is not known about the cast changes?
The public explanations are uneven. The specific basis for the “creative reasons” cited in Krosney’s case, the Kruntchev twins’ departure rationale, Morrison’s personal reason for not returning, and the reason for Alexander’s recast are not established by the cited reports. The production’s explanation for aging up Boyd should not be presented as Morrison’s own motive, and Ephraim’s unavailability should not be generalized into a reason for every cast change.
