But the project has no publicly established release date, full cast, detailed plot, or production schedule as of October 8, 2026.
What is Daisy Ridley’s new Star Wars movie about?
Lucasfilm announced the film at Star Wars Celebration Europe in April 2023. Its stated premise is that Rey will build a new Jedi Order after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The announcement did not reveal a detailed story or confirm a title. Lucasfilm’s announcement is the source for the project’s confirmed premise and creative team.
The film’s context is The Rise of Skywalker, which Lucasfilm identifies as the story in which Rey and Kylo Ren take center stage. Viewers wanting to revisit Rey’s story before the new film can start with Lucasfilm’s official film page.
Who is involved, and what has been confirmed?
- Daisy Ridley is set to reprise Rey.
- Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was announced as director.
- Rey building a new Jedi Order is the announced premise.
Lucasfilm’s announcement did not establish a full cast, a final title, or a more detailed plot. Calling it New Jedi Order or “Episode X” as though either were the confirmed title would go beyond what was announced.

When will the Rey movie come out?
No release date or current production schedule had been publicly established in the sources available as of October 8, 2026. The StarWars.com film listings surfaced in reporting did not include the Rey project; that omission does not establish that the film has been canceled.
In January 2026 coverage, Ridley said she did not know whether there would be news about the film that year and suggested it might be “in the future sometime.” That was a comment about the possibility of news, not an announcement of a release date or production start.

Has the movie been canceled?
There has been no official cancellation announcement in the cited reporting. A September 2026 GamesRadar+ report described little public movement since the 2023 announcement and noted fan speculation that the project might not happen. That speculation is not confirmation from Lucasfilm. Without an official update, the accurate description is that the film was announced but its current schedule and status have not been publicly clarified.
