The Block NZ was first postponed because of difficult housing-market conditions and disappointing auction results; in May 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery said a business restructure meant it would stop making fully funded local shows, including the series. Four Browns Bay homes prepared for the abandoned season were later sold, but the reported sale figures do not establish the production’s overall profit or loss. No return has been confirmed in the reporting reviewed.
Why was The Block NZ postponed?
The postponement followed the 2022 season, whose property auctions produced disappointing outcomes. When announcing the delay, the broadcaster cited ongoing challenges in the housing market and said moving the programme to 2024 would give contestants and the show a better chance of success. The initial delay was therefore framed around the market and auction prospects, not the later restructure.
The Block NZ had been on New Zealand screens since 2012. Its planned next run was described as the programme’s eleventh season, with Mark Richardson as host, according to the New Zealand Herald.
Why was the postponed season cancelled?
In May 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery said it would no longer make fully funded local shows as part of a business restructure, and that The Block NZ was among the programmes affected. The company’s spokeswoman said: “When we announced our business restructure earlier this year, we indicated that Warner Bros Discovery would no longer make fully funded local shows, which includes The Block NZ.” The explanation was reported by ABC News and the New Zealand Herald.

This was a different stated reason from the one behind the postponement: housing-market difficulty informed the delay, while the company linked the later cancellation to its change in local-production funding. The available reporting does not establish that the restructure was the only factor behind the decision.
What happened to the four Browns Bay houses?
Four townhouses in Browns Bay, Auckland, had been prepared for the cancelled season. Contestants would have completed the interiors before the properties went to market. After the series was cancelled, the homes were sold. OneRoof reported in 2025 that their combined sale total was NZ$5.88 million; it also reported that the production company had earlier paid NZ$6.25 million for the site. See OneRoof’s account of the sales.

Those figures compare reported resale proceeds for the four homes with the historical site purchase price. They are not a full production accounting: the comparison does not include construction, transaction or other costs, so the difference between the amounts should not be described as the show’s loss.
Do the earlier auction results explain the cancellation?
The 2022 auctions help explain why the programme was postponed, but they should not be conflated with the later cancellation. The New Zealand Herald reported that the 2022 winners’ home sold for NZ$4,000 above reserve. That specific margin is not the same as the broader assessment that the season’s auction outcomes were disappointing, and it does not by itself establish why Warner Bros. Discovery later cancelled the planned run.

Will The Block NZ return?
No confirmed return is established in the reporting reviewed. NZ On Air discussed conversations with Warner Bros. Discovery about funded and pending content for Three and ThreeNow generally, but that is not confirmation of a new Block NZ season. The company’s broader content discussions do not show that the programme has been recommissioned, nor do they prove it can never return.
