The audience at the 2010 Glamour Women of the Year Awards did not react to Patrick Stewart’s confrontation with James Corden in just one way: the event editor recalled laughter at first, then heckling and boos as Stewart’s remarks became personal. Stewart later said he had been drinking too much champagne and objected to comments Corden had made to an actress. The episode describes one room’s response, not a measured consensus among fans.
What happened between Patrick Stewart and James Corden?
At the 2010 Glamour Women of the Year Awards, Corden hosted and Stewart presented an award. Glamour editor Jo Elvin later described Stewart stopping during the proceedings to address the host. The exchange began amid laughter, but as it continued, audience members heckled. Elvin wrote that it had already been going for about five minutes when the edited clips commonly shared online began, meaning those clips may leave out the lead-in. Elvin’s account is a contemporaneous event editor’s recollection, not a survey of every guest.

Stewart criticized Corden’s hosting manner, including his hands in his pockets, then made remarks about his shirt and belly. Elvin said the boos became particularly noticeable when the exchange turned personal. A contemporary report by the London Evening Standard also covered the dispute and quoted Corden saying he found it disappointing.
Why did the audience boo Patrick Stewart?
Stewart’s personal jabs appear to have shifted the mood of the room. Elvin described a light atmosphere and laughter before the exchange became strained, with heckling and boos following as Stewart continued. She wrote that Corden tried to apologize for something he said he had not done and eventually told Stewart to get on with presenting the award.
After receiving her award, Zoe Saldana joked that she liked Corden’s belly but would pay to see Stewart dying on stage. Elvin said the joke defused the tension and laughter returned. That sequence helps explain why the response was mixed over time rather than a single, uniform audience verdict.
What explanation did Stewart give later?
In a retrospective 2015 Esquire interview, Stewart said he took issue with things Corden had said to an actress during the show. He also acknowledged he had been drinking too much champagne and decided to confront Corden. Recalling the crowd’s reaction, Stewart said, “But then came the first boos from the audience.” He called the incident a hard lesson.
This is Stewart’s later explanation of his motivation and memory of the crowd; it does not establish the intent or effect of every individual remark. The event editor’s account supplies a separate perspective on how the room’s mood changed.
Were Stewart and Corden feuding afterward?
There is no evidence in these accounts of an ongoing public feud. In the same 2015 interview, Stewart said, “We’ve talked since—we’re friends.” In April 2023, Stewart appeared with Mila Kunis on Corden’s The Late Late Show, as StarTrek.com reported. That later public appearance is consistent with cordial contact, though it cannot establish what either man privately felt.

Does the incident show that fans generally disliked the reception?
No quantified statistic or representative measure of fan opinion is established by the accounts cited here. They describe reactions inside the awards room—laughter, heckling, and boos—and Stewart’s recollection that the boos grew. It is more accurate to say that some people in the room booed Stewart’s personal remarks than to claim that fans broadly agreed on how he was treated.
