“Gen Z disaster” is Jasmine Valentine’s opinionated forecast—not a finding about how young viewers will respond. Her 25 July 2025 TechRadar article argued that the trailer for Prime Video’s new War of the Worlds made H. G. Wells’s alien-invasion story look awkwardly redesigned around computer screens and digital services. The film’s listed Prime Video release date was 30 July 2025, so the trailer is no longer new. What the 2025 film is about
The film stars Ice Cube as Will Radford, a cyber-security analyst for Homeland Security whose life is disrupted by an alien attack. Eva Longoria is also among the named cast. Prime Video presents this reimagining as engaging with technology, surveillance and privacy, themes that connect the invasion story to the systems people use every day. The title belongs to a long adaptation lineage that includes Wells’s novel, Jeff Wayne’s 1978 musical and Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film. Prime Video describes the 2025 movie as a reinterpretation of Wells’s novel; it is one version of the story, not a replacement for the source text. Explore H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds.
Why the trailer prompted the “Gen Z disaster” label
Valentine’s core objection was the movie’s screen-first presentation. The trailer signals a story told through computer screens and digital interfaces, a choice she felt made a sci-fi classic look like an attempt to modernize itself for younger viewers. Her subheading, “No sci-fi classic should be set on Zoom,” captures the argument, but it is an editorial judgment rather than an objective rule about adaptation.
#1 Best Overall
The Guardian’s 2025 review also described the film’s screenlife approach, noting its frequent focus on Will’s computer and video calls. “Screenlife” is a useful shorthand for the interface-heavy style; it should not be taken to mean that every shot is strictly presented from a computer’s point of view. Read The Guardian’s review.
What the headline does—and does not—say about Gen Z
The headline is a cultural prediction about a specific creative choice: whether digital-interface storytelling makes this adaptation feel awkward or appealing. The sources cited here provide no study, audience survey or demographic evidence showing that Gen Z viewers reject the film. The label should therefore be read as Valentine’s provocative framing, not as a claim about a generation’s measured reaction.

How the film was received
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 4% Tomatometer from 50 reviews and a 20% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 ratings when its page was accessed on 8 October 2026. These are changing aggregator snapshots, not a poll of Gen Z or a stable measure of every viewer’s opinion. Check Rotten Tomatoes for its current figures.
The Guardian reported a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score on 6 August 2025, showing why a score needs a date attached. Nor was the response literally unanimous: Metacritic includes an individual user who described the film as flawed but entertaining as inexpensive viewing. That comment is one person’s opinion, not representative audience evidence. See Metacritic’s page.
Where to start with the source story
Readers curious about the premise behind the adaptations can turn to Wells’s The War of the Worlds. It provides source-material context for the 2025 reinterpretation, but the available information does not establish a particular edition, official movie tie-in or current retail listing. The film’s trailer and the review debate are best understood as reactions to this adaptation’s screen-focused approach, not as a verdict on every version of the story.
