A vintage sea otter shirt Taylor Swift wore sparked a fan search for its origin—and Monterey Bay Aquarium turned that attention into a conservation fundraiser. The campaign passed its $1.3 million goal in less than eight hours; the Associated Press later reported more than $2 million raised, with a subsequent aquarium update putting the total above $2.3 million.
How Swift’s shirt sparked the campaign
Swift wore a vintage Monterey Bay Aquarium sea otter shirt in footage associated with The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. Fans recognized the design and contacted the aquarium asking where they could get one. The aquarium responded by reissuing the design as part of a fundraiser. The Associated Press reported that the original design dated to the 1990s.
The shirt sighting explains the sudden interest, but the available reporting does not establish why Swift chose to wear it. Aquarium staff noted that Swift and Travis Kelce had discussed Kelce’s affection for otters on the New Heights podcast; that was context for their speculation, not a confirmed explanation.
How much the fundraiser raised
The aquarium set an initial goal of $1.3 million. The Associated Press reported that the campaign exceeded that target in less than eight hours and had raised more than $2 million by Friday afternoon. A later update from the aquarium reported a total above $2.3 million. Those are reported totals at different points in the campaign, not conflicting figures. The aquarium’s later update gave the higher figure.

What donors received and where the money went
At the time of the campaign, a donation of at least $65.13 qualified a donor to receive the shirt. That was a fundraising threshold, not a stated retail price. The aquarium said proceeds supported its Sea Otter Program and other ocean conservation efforts, including work with injured and orphaned otters. The Associated Press reported that Liberty Graphics printed the reissue on cotton using water-based ink.
The aquarium’s director of content strategy, Liz MacDonald, described staff’s response to meeting the goal: “We definitely had a little Taylor Swift dance party in the office yesterday afternoon when we hit the goal,” she told the Associated Press.

Can you still get the shirt?
The cited campaign coverage and aquarium update do not establish whether the shirt is currently available or whether the donation terms remain in effect. Treat the $65.13 threshold as historical campaign information, not a current offer. Swift’s wearing the design prompted fan interest; the cited sources do not say that she organized, endorsed, or donated to the fundraiser.
