Rotten Tomatoes’ snapshot, checked October 8, 2026, showed a 63% critic score from 52 reviews and a 72% audience score from more than 500 ratings. Those figures mark a difference in reception, but the review excerpts reveal more: critics disagree about the show’s writing, its tonal shift toward quieter drama, and whether its New York-to-Montana contrast works.
What is The Madison about?
The series follows the Clyburns as they leave their comfortable New York City lives and relocate to Montana. Taylor Sheridan is among the season’s executive producers. The premise sets up a contrast between city life and the American West, but the show’s critical discussion is not simply about scenery or genre: reviewers also respond to its characters, performances, and quieter moments. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page lists Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, Beau Garrett, Elle Chapman, Patrick J. Adams, and Amiah Miller among the cast.

What do the Rotten Tomatoes scores say?
As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes reported 63% from 52 critic reviews and 72% from more than 500 audience ratings. The season has six episodes. These are dated snapshots, not permanent ratings: scores and review counts can change as more ratings or reviews are added.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus praises a “top-tier Michelle Pfeiffer,” “beautiful East Coast locations,” and the expansion of Sheridan’s television universe, while suggesting the series may not satisfy every viewer. The aggregate score gives a quick sense of reception, but it does not explain what individual critics find effective or frustrating.

Why are critics disagreeing?
Performances and quieter drama
The consensus singles out Pfeiffer, and the review excerpts point to a divide over the show’s tone and characterization. Slate’s Rebecca Onion calls the women “ridiculous, as many of Sheridan’s women are,” yet argues that the divisions the series explores can feel “purifying” after seasons focused on wealthy Duttons playing country. That response suggests the shift in perspective is part of the appeal for at least one reviewer, even alongside reservations about the writing of its women.
NPR’s David Bianculli also sees a contrast within the season: he calls some scenes and concepts “absurd in the extreme,” but says there are “moments of true beauty and calm.” His assessment captures a tension between the show’s heightened ideas and its quieter passages.

Writing and the New York–Montana contrast
Bianculli’s example of the streets of New York being presented as more dangerous than the wild West points to a specific sticking point: whether the series’ city-versus-frontier framing feels convincing or overplayed. Peter Travers of The Travers Take is far less persuaded overall, describing the season as one that will “bore you breathless.” Together, these excerpts show a range of reactions rather than a single explanation for the score: some reviewers value the performances and calm, while others object to the concepts, characterization, or pace.
How many episodes are there, and when did they arrive?
Rotten Tomatoes lists six episodes, released in two groups: episodes 1–3 are dated March 14, 2026, and episodes 4–6 are dated March 21, 2026. The listing describes the season’s schedule; it does not establish that every service or region offered the episodes on those dates.
