Short answer: Sylvester Stallone has said he was repeatedly passed over for gangster parts, and the one specific reason he has given is his appearance. In a 2022 interview appearance, he recalled being told he did not look Italian enough after auditioning for The Godfather. The available reporting does not document a list of Mafia roles he lost, so “constantly denied” describes his own recollection rather than a verified record of casting decisions.
What Stallone said about gangster roles
The core of this story is a single, widely reported interview appearance. Fox News covered Stallone’s remarks from a Fox & Friends appearance in an article published on November 11, 2022. In it, he described a long-running sense of exclusion from gangster parts:
“For some reason, gangsters have this aura, and I’ve been left out every time,” he said.
That sentence is a retrospective, general statement. It tells readers how he feels about his career, not which films he was considered for. It is the reason the phrase “constantly denied” appears in headlines, but it should be read as his characterization of his own experience.

The Godfather audition: the one concrete example
The only specific episode Stallone gave in that coverage concerns The Godfather. He recalled:
“I remember going in to audition for ‘The Godfather’ as an extra, one of 250 people at the wedding.”
Rank #2
Three details matter here:
- The part was an extra, not a named character. He was auditioning to appear in the wedding scene as one of a crowd, not for a speaking role.
- The 250 figure is his estimate. It is his recollection of how many people were auditioning for those extra positions, and no casting record in the reporting confirms it.
- The rejection is his account of what he was told. He added: “They said I don’t look Italian enough.” The Fox News report does not identify who allegedly made that remark, and it does not describe a formal casting decision.
What “not Italian enough” does and does not establish
The appearance explanation is the most direct answer to the “why” in this story, and it is the only reason Stallone gives for a specific rejection. Still, it rests on a single secondhand remark that he attributes to unnamed people. It is reasonable to report it as his explanation. It is not established as a documented studio or casting-office position, and it does not prove that appearance was the sole factor in any outcome, including the extra audition.
It is also worth noting that the anecdote involves an audition for background work. Being passed over for an extra part is a different kind of rejection from losing a lead role, and the reporting does not say whether Stallone was considered for any larger part in that production.

Tulsa King as his first mobster role
The later contrast is Tulsa King. Fox News reported that the series was Stallone’s first mobster role. It described Dwight Manfredi as a mobster exiled to Tulsa after serving a 25-year prison term, where he has to build a new criminal family. The show premiered in November 2022 on Paramount+ and the Paramount cable network. That is a historical launch detail from the 2022 coverage, not a statement about where the series is available today.
This means the reporting places his first on-screen gangster part in 2022, after the early anecdote, and presents it as a turning point in how the gangster-role question is framed. It does not connect the two events as a documented sequence of casting decisions.
Comparing the two examples
The two gangster-related episodes differ in type of part, evidence and date. The table below sets them side by side.
| Element | Early Godfather audition | Later Tulsa King role |
|---|---|---|
| Type of part | Extra in the wedding scene, per Stallone | Series lead as Dwight Manfredi, per Fox News |
| Evidence type | Stallone’s retrospective recollection of what he was told | Reported premise and casting description in the 2022 coverage |
| Stated reason | “They said I don’t look Italian enough,” as he recalled it | Not stated in the coverage |
| Date | Early career, undated in the reporting | Series premiered November 2022 |
What the evidence does not show
- No named Mafia films or specific roles beyond The Godfather audition are documented as rejections in the reporting.
- No count of rejected gangster parts is established. “Left out every time” is a general statement and should not be turned into a number.
- No casting executive, director or studio is identified as the source of the appearance comment.
- No transcript of the full interview is cited, so the wording above reflects the quotations as Fox News reproduced them.
How to read the story
The most accurate version of the story is that Stallone has said, in a 2022 television appearance, that he felt consistently excluded from gangster roles. The one concrete example he gave was an early audition for an extra spot in The Godfather, where he says he was told he did not look Italian enough. His first mobster role came later, with Tulsa King. Beyond those points, the claim that he was “constantly denied” Mafia parts rests on his own account, which the available reporting does not independently verify.
