Why Stephen Colbert Says Taylor Swift Made Him a Fan for Life

Stephen Colbert says Taylor Swift won his lasting affection with a small kindness to his daughter: when they met at the Grammys, Swift called her “Pretty girl.” Colbert later described his gratitude with deliberately extravagant jokes about how far he would go for Swift.

What Taylor Swift said to Colbert’s daughter

Colbert recalled taking his daughter to the Grammys, where she met Swift. As TheWrap reported in March 2024, Colbert said Swift called her “Pretty girl.” He recalled answering, “Whatever you want, my queen.” The account does not identify the ceremony’s year or say how old his daughter was at the time.

The moment mattered to Colbert because it was personal: he saw Swift treat his daughter warmly. His explanation was not about a performance or a public gesture, but about the way she spoke to someone he loves.

Why Colbert said he would follow Swift into battle

In the 2024 account, Colbert joked, “Taylor was so nice to her that to this day, I would murder for her if she wanted me to.” The line was comic exaggeration, expressing gratitude and fandom—not a literal threat or an account of any separate event.

In December 2025, Just Jared reported that The Late Show’s Instagram account had shared an earlier clip of Colbert recalling the story ahead of Swift’s appearance on the program. The report quoted him saying, “I’ll love Taylor Swift till the day I die, and I’ll follow her into battle,” and, “I would jump off a cliff into a pit of spikes for that woman, for how nice she was to my daughter.” These are quotations as reported by Just Jared, not a transcript independently verified against the original video.

How the story resurfaced

TheWrap’s March 14, 2024 coverage placed the anecdote in a conversation between Colbert and Paul Rudd about their daughters’ interest in Swift. The story resurfaced in 2025 when the show’s Instagram account shared the earlier clip, according to Just Jared’s December 10 report. The coverage establishes that the clip was shared before Swift’s appearance; it does not establish that it remains available now.

Colbert’s separate “Swiffer” joke

In a November 2023 monologue about Swift and Travis Kelce, Colbert jokingly called himself a “Swiffer.” TheWrap explained that it was a gag about the cleaning appliance, not a name Swift fans use for themselves. It was separate from the Grammys story about his daughter.
