Their explanation was twofold: election satire had become mentally consuming and less enjoyable, and Parker said they were also waiting for Paramount to resolve an unspecified issue.
Why did South Park skip the 2024 election?
In a September 5, 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Matt Stone said covering presidential elections had become a “mind scramble” that could take over the work. “Obviously, it’s fucking important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun,” he said.

Trey Parker offered a more specific reason for not returning to Donald Trump jokes: “I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.” Together, their comments point to a creative choice to step away from the election cycle, rather than a claim that the election itself was unimportant.
What did Paramount have to do with the timing?
Parker also said part of the delay involved “waiting for Paramount to figure all their shit out.” He did not say what Paramount matter he meant. The Guardian and Variety reported the comment; Variety placed it in the context of Paramount Global’s then-pending sale to Skydance. That context does not establish that the sale caused the show’s timing.

How does the decision compare with earlier election episodes?
South Park had previously responded to election results quickly. According to TVLine, “About Last Night…” followed Barack Obama’s 2008 victory by one night, and “Oh, Jeez” aired the night after Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Vanity Fair recalled that Parker and Stone made the 2016 episode in a 36-hour “mad dash” after Trump’s victory surprised them. That example illustrates the pressure of producing timely satire around an unpredictable result; it does not prove that the 2016 experience alone determined their 2024 choice.

What did “return in 2025” mean?
The 2025 return was the creators’ announcement in September 2024, describing a plan to come back after the November election. It was not a specific release date, nor does that announcement by itself establish the show’s present schedule or streaming availability.
