The posts made the term newly visible online, but viral attention does not show how many people took part or whether a lasting U.S. movement formed.
What does 4B mean?
The name 4B refers to four refusals in heterosexual relationships. The terms are commonly rendered from Korean as bihon (marriage), bichulsan (childbirth), biyeonae (dating), and bisekseu (sex). English-language accounts may list them in a different order, but the four domains are the same.
Why did 4B trend on U.S. TikTok after the election?
In the days after the November 2024 election, some U.S. creators discussed 4B in response to the result and concerns about reproductive rights. Their posts presented the idea as a personal response or possible choice; the available reporting does not establish that these creators represented a coordinated organization or a broad base of participants.
The election-week numbers capture attention at specific moments, not membership. WIRED reported on November 7, 2024, that one TikTok post had more than 3 million views and another had nearly 9 million. ABC News reported on November 8 that one video had more than 3 million views and over 300,000 likes, while another had over 1.7 million likes. These are separate reports and snapshots, not a shared tally of unique viewers or people who adopted 4B. The Guardian reported a 450% increase in Google searches for “4B” on the Wednesday after the election; that short-term rise also measures interest, not participation.

Where did the movement come from?
4B is associated with online feminist activism in South Korea. Reporting describes it in the context of protests against misogyny, gender-based violence, and digital sexual crimes—issues and a social history that predate the U.S. election. South Korean activist Haein Shim told The Guardian: “What we want is not to be labeled simply as some man’s wife or girlfriend, but to have independence.”
Journalist and author Hawon Jung cautioned that U.S. interest emerged in a different social context from the one that shaped the South Korean movement. The name and some of its ideas traveled across borders, but that does not make the two contexts interchangeable. Jung’s book Flowers of Fire: The Inside Story of South Korea’s Feminist Movement & What It Means for Women’s Rights Worldwide offers further reading on the broader Korean feminist context; it is not a 4B guide.

What the U.S. posts do—and do not—show
| Evidence | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Election-week TikTok views and likes reported by WIRED and ABC News | Some posts about 4B attracted substantial attention at the time. | How many viewers adopted the practice, whether viewers were unique, or whether participation continued. |
| The Guardian’s reported 450% Google-search increase on the Wednesday after the election | Search interest rose sharply for a short period. | Movement membership, organized activity, or sustained support. |
| Creators’ public discussions of adopting or adapting 4B | Some individuals described considering or choosing it after the result. | That they spoke for a larger constituency or belonged to a formal U.S. organization. |
The distinction matters because the South Korean movement itself is difficult to measure: it has been online and sometimes anonymous. Reporting also cautions against treating 4B as the sole explanation for South Korea’s low fertility rate. Neither viral posts nor demographic trends, by themselves, tell the story of individual motives or organized participation.

In this episode, “spreading” is best understood as a burst of visibility and discussion on a platform. Some U.S. creators used the term after the election, and contemporaneous reports documented high engagement and search interest. Those facts show that 4B entered a wider U.S. conversation; they do not prove that it became a large, durable, or formally organized movement in the United States.
