Why Some Star Wars Fans Say Disney Ruined the Franchise

“Disney ruined Star Wars” expresses several distinct criticisms of the sequel era, but it is not a measured consensus—and backlash over new films predates Disney.

When fans say Disney “ruined Star Wars,” they usually mean that the sequel trilogy felt creatively inconsistent, treated familiar characters in ways they rejected, or abandoned the future-film ideas George Lucas had discussed. Those are real strands of criticism, not a measured consensus: there is no representative survey establishing how many fans hold that view, and Star Wars has faced fierce disagreement over new films under Lucas as well as under Disney.

What fans mean by “ruined”

The phrase is a verdict about creative direction, not a single, agreed-upon defect. For some critics, the sequel films did not feel like parts of one coherent plan. For others, the central issue was what happened to characters they had followed for decades. Still others objected that Disney did not use Lucas’s proposed direction for a sequel trilogy.

Those complaints overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A viewer can dislike the story choices without believing the films lack continuity; another can accept the character arcs while wishing the trilogy had followed Lucas’s ideas. Online posts and forceful headlines show that these arguments exist, but do not establish how common any one view is.

Why the sequel trilogy’s direction divided viewers

A story that did not feel planned as one trilogy

Some critics see the three sequel films as lacking a consistent long-range story. A TIME review of The Rise of Skywalker described it as trying to be everything to everyone—a critic’s assessment of that film, not evidence of what all fans think. For viewers who wanted a unified arc, the trilogy’s overall direction became part of the complaint that the franchise had lost its way.

Legacy characters and expectations

The sequels brought back familiar characters but did not necessarily continue them in the way viewers expected. Rian Johnson discussed the choice to have Luke withdraw from the fight in The Last Jedi; some viewers saw that as a meaningful challenge to expectations, while others considered it a betrayal of the character or of the continuation they had imagined. The disagreement is about interpretation and taste, not a fact that can be settled by counting a handful of reactions.

Familiar patterns versus new directions

Some viewers wanted the films to feel recognizably like earlier Star Wars stories; others welcomed new approaches. That tension is one reason a single label such as “ruined” can obscure more than it explains. What one fan reads as a return to familiar ground, another may find derivative; what one sees as a daring change, another may find out of character.

What Lucas’s unused plans do—and do not—tell us

Lucas discussed possible future trilogies, but his plans shifted over time. They were not one stable, fully finished blueprint that Disney simply filmed or rejected. Bob Iger was reported as saying Lucas felt betrayed when Disney did not use his sequel plans. Lucas also criticized The Force Awakens as retro and was not creatively involved in making it. These accounts help explain why the decision became a source of discontent for Lucas and some fans; they cannot show that an unmade version would have been better or pleased more viewers.

Production history added to the criticism

Creative disagreements are not the only reason some people criticize Disney-era Star Wars. The production of the Han Solo film included a change of directors during production, and audience reactions to projects during Kathleen Kennedy’s Lucasfilm tenure were mixed, according to Associated Press reporting. That supports a narrower point: at least one major production had a disruptive personnel change, and the broader slate did not draw uniform reactions. It does not, by itself, prove that Disney mismanaged every Star Wars project.

Star Wars backlash did not begin with Disney

Lucas’s prequel films also prompted intense criticism. Recalling the reaction to The Phantom Menace, Lucas said: “They said it was horrible, it ruined the movie, and how can you watch this, and all that kind of stuff.” His recollection, published in a StarWars.com oral history, is not a comment on Disney-era films. It does show that claims that a new installment has “ruined” Star Wars predate Disney’s stewardship. Later viewers may embrace films that earlier audiences rejected, while fans who grew up with one era may judge the next by a different standard.

How to assess the complaint without treating it as a consensus

“Disney ruined Star Wars” bundles several judgments into one slogan. To understand a particular fan’s objection, consider which of these questions they are actually answering:

  • Production history: Were creative personnel or leadership changed during production?
  • Audience cohort: Did the viewer grow up with the original films, the prequels, animated series, or the sequels?

These are useful lenses for discussing the films, not quantified measures of audience opinion. No reliable figure establishes what share of fans believes Disney ruined the franchise, and review reactions or individual posts cannot supply one. The strongest defensible conclusion is that the sequel trilogy produced genuine, sometimes sharply opposed criticism—and that the phrase “ruined Star Wars” remains one side of a longstanding argument over what Star Wars should be.

What the latest leadership change means

As reported by the Associated Press, Kathleen Kennedy stepped down and Dave Filoni took over as Lucasfilm president and chief creative officer. That is relevant context for the franchise’s next chapter, but a change in leadership does not settle the disagreement over the sequel films or establish that the creative debate has been resolved.
