Taylor Swift’s “the lakes” imagines England’s Lake District as a refuge from public scrutiny—a place for privacy, grief, love and creative life. Its references to Windermere and Romantic poets give that escape a real landscape and literary atmosphere. The song supports readings about fame and the desire to be left alone, but it does not establish that any specific person or event is its subject.
Why the song points to England’s Lake District
“The lakes” is not simply a general image of peaceful scenery. Windermere, a lake in England’s Lake District, anchors the song’s imagined destination. Contemporary reporting connected the place references to the region, and ABC News later described the Lake District as an inspiration for the song. ITV News Border reported on the Lake District connection; ABC News also discussed the setting.

The location carries a literary association, too. ABC News connects the Lake District with Romantic poets William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. That context helps explain the song’s atmosphere of beauty and sorrow, and its suggestion that art can offer a private place to feel deeply. It does not mean every image is a direct quotation or a coded reference to a particular poet.
How the lakes become a refuge from scrutiny
The song sets the wish to leave public life behind against images of phones and being watched. “Hunters with cell phones” makes the intrusion feel contemporary: the threat is not only judgment but the ability to record, circulate and scrutinize. The retreat toward the lakes can therefore be read as a longing for a life beyond constant attention.

That interpretation is consistent with Swift’s description of the broader folklore experience. In a social post reproduced by ABC News, she wrote, “It’s been one year since we escaped the real world together and imagined ourselves someplace simpler.” That statement describes the album’s imaginative escape; it is not a definitive explanation of each line in “the lakes.” ELLE likewise reads the song through fame and social-media scrutiny, while treating proposed links to real people as interpretations rather than confirmed facts. ELLE’s interpretation is one account of that reading.
Who is “my muse”?
The song’s speaker imagines going to the lakes with a beloved or muse, making the retreat relational as well as solitary. The phrase can suggest a person who inspires the speaker, but the lyric alone does not identify that person. Readings that name a partner, a former relationship or a music-business dispute should be understood as theories unless supported by an explicit confirmation from Swift or another primary source.

- Exclusive Limited Edition Red Colored 2x Vinyl LP
A careful interpretation keeps the speaker distinct from Swift herself. The song can draw on feelings or circumstances listeners associate with a public artist without serving as a verified account of a particular relationship or event. The strongest reading stays close to what the song names: a landscape, a desire for privacy and a companion imagined in that refuge.
What the arrangement adds to the meaning
Jack Antonoff, identified as the song’s co-writer and co-producer, recalled that an orchestral version was pared back after Swift asked to “make it small.” ABC News quoted his account from Billboard. The anecdote offers context for the finished song’s intimate scale: rather than overwhelm its images with a grand arrangement, the recording makes the imagined retreat feel contained. It is collaborator testimony about the arrangement, not a separate explanation of the lyrics.

“The lakes” appeared as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of folklore. The FADER reported on August 18, 2020, that Swift shared the track from the deluxe edition and described it as sparse and acoustic-driven, written and produced by Swift and Antonoff. The FADER’s release report covers that context.
Apple Music’s listing identifies the deluxe version as a 17-song release dated August 18, 2020. ELLE’s August 7, 2020 description of the track as exclusive to physical formats was a statement about availability at that time, not a guide to present-day access.

Which interpretation is best supported?
The text-and-landscape reading has the clearest footing: the song names a real place and draws on its literary associations. The fame-and-privacy reading is also persuasive because the song’s phone imagery and imagined retreat fit Swift’s public framing of folklore as an escape into someplace simpler. These readings can coexist: the Lake District is both a specific setting and a symbol of protected emotional space.
Claims about a named individual or a specific real-world incident require a different standard of evidence. Without a direct confirmation, they remain listener interpretations—not established meanings. No single line-by-line explanation from Swift is established in the cited reporting.
