In the days before Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched on October 16, 2025, some customers reported that Pokémon Center had canceled their preorders. Contemporary reports relayed different explanations, including payment reauthorization problems and an overselling message, but did not establish how many orders were affected or one confirmed cause for all of them.
What happened to the preorders?
On October 15, 2025, Insider Gaming reported customer accounts describing cancellations shortly before launch. Some customers said they were told that Pokémon Center could not reauthorize payment; another account described an overselling explanation. The available reporting did not establish the incident’s scale or confirm a single explanation across cases.
The game and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition were both announced for release on October 16, 2025. Pokémon Center’s promotion offered a gift with purchase for qualifying preorders, so a cancellation could affect more than when a customer received the game. The announcement does not establish that every canceled order included the promotional gift or what happened to an individual customer’s eligibility. The Pokémon Company’s preorder announcement lists the editions, release date and promotion.
Why might Pokémon Center cancel a preorder?
Pokémon Center’s general policies explain possible causes, but they are not a retrospective account of each Legends: Z-A cancellation. Its preorder FAQ, updated August 13, 2026, says cancellations can occur when there is an issue with billing or shipping information. It also describes a payment authorization check during shipping processing; if the payment method is invalid or the payment cannot be authorized, the preorder may be canceled.

The broader order-cancellation policy, updated February 3, 2025, also lists product unavailability and card details that have changed since an order was placed among common reasons. An unavailable item can lead to cancellation of an entire order, not only that item.
What customers reported in this incident
A Reddit user’s October 14, 2025, post reproduced a purported Pokémon Center support reply attributing that customer’s cancellation to the game being oversold at shipment and saying a pending charge had been voided. This is a customer-posted copy of a reply, not an independently authenticated correspondence or a public company statement. The post is available here. It supports describing overselling as an explanation reported by one customer—not as a confirmed cause for all affected orders.

Will you get your money back?
Under Pokémon Center’s general preorder policy, customers will not be charged for a canceled preorder. A pending authorization may still appear temporarily until the customer’s financial institution releases it. The FAQ says the initial authorization placed when a preorder is submitted may drop after five to seven business days; the card is charged when the order ships, with another authorization three to five business days before shipping. These are the FAQ’s general payment timings, not a promised release schedule for a particular canceled order.
For a specific cancellation, check the order details and contact Pokémon Center Support. The FAQ warns that an item may not be available to preorder again after cancellation; it does not promise that a canceled order can be reinstated or give a universal bank-release timeline.

What remains unconfirmed
No public Pokémon Center statement specifically confirming the October 2025 Legends: Z-A cancellation incident is cited in the available contemporaneous coverage. The number of affected customers, regions, editions and preorder gifts involved is also unverified. The reports establish that some customers described cancellations, not that all preorders were canceled or that every customer received the same explanation or payment outcome.
Because the game launched in 2025, anyone seeking a copy now would be looking for a replacement purchase, not a preorder. Check the listing for the correct Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and confirm the seller, availability, delivery timing and any included bonus. The Pokémon Center gift was part of its own preorder promotion; the official announcement does not establish that other sellers offer it.
