Reports documented cheering, shouting, popcorn and other objects thrown, and cinema warnings or removals in several places. They did not establish that fireworks were common, or that most screenings were disruptive.
What does “chicken jockey” mean in Minecraft?
In Minecraft, a chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken—a rare in-game occurrence. In A Minecraft Movie, Steve, played by Jack Black, calls out “Chicken jockey!” when the scene appears. The short, recognizable line became a cue for some viewers to shout, cheer, jump or throw popcorn.
ABC News Australia reported that one TikTok video of the audience reaction had surpassed 4.3 million views when the outlet updated its report on April 18, 2025. That figure describes one video at that time, not the total reach of the trend or its current view count. ABC News Australia’s report covered the reactions and their spread.
What happened at screenings?
News reports in April 2025 described incidents at cinemas in Australia, the UK and the US, including shouting, cheering, popcorn and other objects thrown, and security or police involvement in some cases. Australian reporting also described a police inquiry after an altercation connected to popcorn throwing. A Utah report included a live chicken brought to a screening. These are reports of incidents, not a count of how often they occurred: no reliable total of disruptive screenings or share of audiences was established.

Nor did every screening turn into a spectacle. The Guardian reported that some showings were quiet, including screenings in Manchester. The available reports do not substantiate fireworks as a typical feature of the trend, despite the wording used in some viral descriptions.
Why did viewers react—and why did TikTok matter?
The reaction combined a familiar game reference, a brief shouted line, audience expectations and videos that made the response itself part of the entertainment. An academic analysis in Frontiers in Communication describes fans anticipating and collectively performing the moment, with social platforms helping circulate that script. It offers an interpretation, not proof that every person who shouted had the same reason.

ABC Radio National’s The Screen Show host Jason DiRosso put the uncertainty plainly: “It’s hard to know why they’re doing it.” ABC’s reporting suggested that some attendees may have been filming for online posts, but that does not explain every reaction. ABC News Australia and the Frontiers in Communication analysis discuss the trend from reporting and academic perspectives.
How did cinemas respond?
Responses varied by venue. Reports described warnings, possible ejection, security involvement and, at one New Jersey theater, an adult-accompaniment rule for minors. Some cinemas also set aside showings where enthusiastic participation was expected. The difference matters: a designated participatory event can set expectations in advance, while throwing objects or interrupting an ordinary screening can affect other patrons and staff.

| Supervision rule | One New Jersey theater required minors to be accompanied by an adult, according to The Guardian. |

| Designated participatory showings | Cineworld promoted showings where fans could dress up and shout the line, while warning them not to make a mess. |
Jamie Tram, a writer and filmmaker quoted by ABC News Australia, said: “Audience participation can be spectacular fun when there are clear expectations set for both patrons and cinema workers.” Director Jared Hess also expressed a positive view of fans making memories with friends and family, as reported by The Guardian. These views sit alongside the practical distinction between invited participation and disruption.
Jack Black addressed the mess in a playful message at a screening. The Los Angeles Times reported his request on April 14, 2025: “for today’s presentation of ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ please no throwing popped corn.” It was Black’s appeal, not an official studio policy. The Los Angeles Times report records the wording.

Is the trend still happening?
The reports behind the viral episode primarily date to April 2025. They establish that disruptive incidents happened and that videos circulated widely, but they do not establish how common the behavior was across all screenings or whether it continued at the same level afterward. A TikTok clip can document a particular audience; it cannot, by itself, measure what moviegoers generally did.
