The objections ranged from personal dislike of the music to complaints about its language, performers and perceived politics; the show’s patriotic imagery and Uncle Sam character helped make it a subject of political debate.
What Kendrick Lamar performed at Super Bowl LIX
Lamar headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. The Associated Press described him as the first solo hip-hop artist to headline the halftime slot. Its review put the set at just under 13 minutes and noted songs including “Squabble Up,” “HUMBLE.,” “DNA.,” “Euphoria” and “man at the garden.” The NFL’s official recording shows the performance in full.
Why the staging invited political interpretations
The show used red, white and blue costuming, dancers arranged in formations, and actor Samuel L. Jackson as an Uncle Sam figure who admonished Lamar to “play the game.” TheGrio described the character as appearing to censor him and noted that the dancers formed an American flag. Those choices gave viewers grounds to read the performance politically, but staging alone does not establish a single intended message. A reported speculation about a lyric change should likewise be treated as speculation, not proof of intent.
Some objections preceded the show. On February 7, 2025, The Washington Post reported that Louisiana Republican lawmakers and pro-family groups had asked the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and Louisiana Stadium Exposition District for a kid-friendly halftime show. That request was made before the performance, not in response to what Lamar ultimately performed.

What named conservative critics said afterward
TheGrio’s February 10 report documented a range of reactions from public figures. Kari Lake, a former Republican Arizona gubernatorial nominee endorsed by Donald Trump, posted “Halftime Show 0/10.” Conservative activist Charlie Kirk wrote, “This music is not my style.” Lauren Boebert asked whether she was the only person who needed subtitles, and former congressman George Santos called the show “absolute TRASH.”
Commentator Benny Johnson went further, criticizing the NFL’s choice and calling Lamar a “talentless mumbling pagan satanic cultist.” That is Johnson’s characterization, not an established description of Lamar. The same report noted that hip-hop fans praised the performance’s political stance and focus on Black culture. These posts document particular reactions; they do not establish what Republicans or conservative viewers generally thought.

What the 125 FCC complaints do—and do not—show
WIRED reported on March 27, 2025 that Federal Communications Commission records released in response to its FOIA request contained 125 complaints about the performance. The complaints raised different objections, including the all-Black performers, language, the music and difficulty understanding it. One anonymous complainant wrote, “I think that it’s racist that there aren’t any white people in this event.” That statement belongs to the complainant quoted by WIRED; it is not an FCC finding.
The 125 figure is a count of complaints in the records WIRED reported, not a poll of viewers or a measure of the broader audience’s reaction. WIRED placed the complaints in the context of an audience of more than 133 million viewers, but that comparison should not be mistaken for a representative audience survey.

How to read the backlash fairly
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline’s sweeping wording: some named conservative figures criticized the show, some Louisiana groups sought a kid-friendly performance in advance, and FCC complaint records included objections to its content and performers. These are distinct kinds of evidence—public posts, a pre-event request and agency complaints—and none alone measures the views of the political right as a whole. Nor was the response uniformly negative: TheGrio also reported praise from hip-hop fans.
