An actor who skips the press tour is not necessarily making one kind of statement. The documented cases describe three different situations: a union directing members to stop promoting work during a labor action, an actor who says he was never shown the finished film he was asked to promote, and an actor who deliberately cut back traditional interviews as a marketing choice. Each has different decision-makers, different stated reasons, and a different level of confirmed fact.
Three things that can count as refusing promotion
Coverage often lumps these together, but they are not the same act:
- Declining interviews for a specific film. The actor stays out of press junkets and sit-down interviews for one release.
- Reducing the press schedule. The actor does fewer pre-release interviews but may still take part in other parts of the campaign.
- A collective pause. Members stop promoting because a union has directed them to during a labor dispute. The individual is following an instruction rather than making a personal call.
Knowing which of these happened tells you who made the decision and why, so check that first when you read about an actor who “refused” to promote a film.
Collective labor action: the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike
The clearest case of a promotion halt is the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. TheWrap reported on July 19, 2023 that SAG-AFTRA had asked members not to do interviews or other promotion until the strike was resolved. Here the refusal was a union request applied to a whole membership, not a decision by one performer about one film.

What members were told
A contemporaneous Santa Monica Daily Press explainer described the rules as members understood them at the time. Actors could post about strike-related matters but were not supposed to promote projects in the pipeline. The explainer also described restrictions on promoting work made by struck companies. It reproduced SAG-AFTRA website guidance that members could promote themselves as artists, union activists, commercial actors, and in other permitted capacities. This is a historical account of the 2023 strike, not a statement of current union rules.
Why actors framed it as solidarity
When TheWrap asked about requests for waivers, Bob Odenkirk answered: “Don’t. It’s a strike. Strike. You lose. We lose. Everybody loses. That’s tough s–t.”

Ike Barinholtz made the same argument in terms of unity: “Yeah, we all are in this together and if some of us are starting new projects and promoting others, that’s gonna cause dissension. We need the opposite. We need solidarity.” Both are personal views reported by TheWrap, and they explain why members saw individual promotion as undermining the strike.
Access to the finished film: Sunil Grover and Coffee With D
NDTV, with IANS material, reported in January 2017 that Sunil Grover stopped promoting the film Coffee With D. His stated reason was that he had repeatedly asked director-producer Vishal Mishra to show him the completed film and was not shown it. In his words: “But I ceased to promote the film when I realised they won’t show it to me.”

The same report says Grover denied writing an open letter attributed to him and said the letter had been released without his consent. That denial is part of the surrounding dispute. The reporting does not present it as the reason for his promotional decision.
The other side of the dispute
Mishra publicly criticized Grover’s refusal, saying: “We are encouraging the underworld to rule the film industry by being scared and let them curb our freedom of speech and expression.” That is Mishra’s argument, not an independent assessment of the film or its production.

The filmmakers also said they had received threats over scenes they described as unflattering to Dawood Ibrahim. Those threat claims are attributed to Mishra and producer Vinod Rahani. The reporting does not establish who, if anyone, made the threats, so treat them as allegations.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama about The Diplomat, John Abraham described resisting a conventional pre-release interview push. His core argument was that promotion is only one part of marketing. He pointed to the four Ps (product, place, price, and promotion) and said studio marketing can include other channels such as trailers and outdoor advertising.

He also preferred a different sequence. “Listen, let’s speak to people who’ve seen the film after the film. It’s a risk we’re running, but let’s speak to people who’ve seen the film after the film.” He added: “As an actor, you’re known by the product you make, not by going to a college.”
These are Abraham’s views on publicity and a description of his own strategy. They are not evidence that interviews do or do not sell tickets.
Quick Recap
How the three cases differ
| Case | Who made the decision | What was declined | Stated reason | What is confirmed versus alleged |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike | The union, applied to members | Interviews and other promotion until the strike was resolved | Labor solidarity, as voiced by Odenkirk and Barinholtz | The union request is reported by TheWrap; the member-facing rules are described in a contemporaneous explainer, not current guidance |
| Coffee With D (reported January 2017) | Sunil Grover | Promotion of the film | Not shown the completed film despite repeated requests | Grover’s account; Mishra and Rahani dispute his stance, and their threat claims are their own allegations |
| The Diplomat | John Abraham | Conventional pre-release interviews, reduced in favor of talking to audiences after they had seen the film | A marketing strategy and his view of publicity | Abraham’s stated strategy; the reporting does not measure whether it worked |
What these examples do not establish
- How common these choices are. The cases are individual accounts. They do not amount to a count of actors who refused promotion or a measure of how often each motive applies.
- Whether actors are contractually required to promote films. These examples do not establish general contract terms, so do not assume a performer’s agreement requires press participation or permits refusal.
- The reliability of anecdotes from informal sources. A 2026 online listicle attributes many such stories to Reddit posts without visible primary sourcing. Treat claims from that kind of source as unconfirmed until a named participant or a primary report backs them up.
