Nicole Kidman’s 1997 Oscars gown was a risk because its chartreuse color and elaborate Chinoiserie-inspired embroidery made it conspicuous—and divisive—on one of the world’s most-watched red carpets. It also put John Galliano’s newly evolving Dior couture direction in front of a mass audience at a moment when the fashion house itself was taking a gamble.

What Kidman wore to the 1997 Oscars

Kidman wore a chartreuse Dior couture gown from John Galliano’s spring/summer 1997 collection. Vogue identifies her custom version as “Absinthe”; contemporary Los Angeles Times coverage described an embroidered sheath with Chinoiserie styling. The custom gown and the collection look are related, but “Absinthe” is the name attached to Kidman’s version. British Vogue’s account of the gown and the Los Angeles Times’s 1997 coverage describe its distinctive details.

Why the look was a risk for Kidman

A color that drew attention—and criticism

Chartreuse, a vivid yellow-green, was an assertive choice for formalwear. Rather than blend into the familiar palette of evening gowns, it made the dress immediately noticeable to photographers and television viewers. The color attracted criticism: a contemporary Los Angeles Times review mocked it, and British Vogue later reported that Joan Rivers exclaimed on air, “What an ugly dress!” That line is a reported remark, not a quotation independently verified here against a recording or transcript.

Ornament and silhouette that refused to play safe

The Chinoiserie-inspired embroidery and couture silhouette gave the gown a visual presence beyond its color. It was not a restrained or conventional red-carpet choice; its detail and shape made the look a statement, with the reputational risk that a bold statement could be judged as easily as it could be admired.

The response was divided, not unanimous

The immediate criticism is only part of the story. Kidman later said she loved “the embroidery on it, and the shape of it,” calling everything about it beautiful. Galliano recalled that she “really blew everyone away.” Those contrasting reactions help explain why the gown endured as a talking point: it was memorable precisely because it invited disagreement. British Vogue recounts both responses.

Why the gown was also a risk for Dior

The dress represented more than one actress’s unusual red-carpet choice. Galliano was shaping a new direction for Dior couture, and Vogue’s retrospective describes the house’s decision to appoint him as a wager on an experimental vision. Dressing Kidman in that work at the Oscars placed the direction before a broad audience at a highly visible moment. Hamish Bowles later described the appearance as “fashion with a capital F coming to the Oscars.” Vogue’s account of the 1997 couture shake-up provides the house-level context.

How it became part of red-carpet fashion history

In retrospect, the gown is often discussed as part of a change in the relationship between stars and designers. Galliano said that “Haute couture was introduced to Hollywood” and credited Kidman’s appearance with helping start a larger business around celebrities wearing designer fashion. A later Los Angeles Times account likewise described the gown as a sensation and connected it to the growing influence of stars in designer fashion, including magazine covers and sales. That is an interpretation of its influence, not proof that one dress alone created the shift. The Los Angeles Times’s retrospective on Oscars red-carpet fashion traces that broader context.

So the risk was twofold: Kidman wore a conspicuous, potentially polarizing couture look, while Dior used a major public occasion to show the work of a newly appointed designer. Whether viewers loved or disliked the gown, its visibility helped make the moment a lasting reference point in discussions of couture and the Oscars.
