Simple Plan made The Kids in the Crowd to mark 25 years as a band, revisit the footage that captured its beginnings and introduce its history to newer listeners. The documentary pairs previously unseen archival material with access to the group’s 2024 tour—and treats the fans who grew up with the band as part of the story, not just its audience.

Why did Simple Plan look back now?
Drummer Chuck Comeau told Rock Sound that the band’s 25th anniversary felt like the right occasion to take stock of its beginnings and accomplishments. He also saw the film as a way to make the group’s history accessible as its shows grew and new listeners discovered its music. Rock Sound

Vocalist Pierre Bouvier told Rolling Stone en Español that the band wanted to cover both the highs and the difficult stretches, rather than present only a success story. He called the documentary “un recuento honesto de cómo llegamos hasta aquí” (“an honest account of how we got here”). Rolling Stone en Español
What early footage did the band find?
Comeau said Simple Plan had been documenting its activity from its earliest months. Late in the film’s production, the band came across a box of VHS tapes and DVDs containing material from its teenage years, including footage of an early performance in a basement. The discovery gave the documentary a direct link to the band’s formative period, rather than relying only on later recollections. Rock Sound

Bouvier’s interview mentions Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte and Mark McGrath among people associated with Simple Plan’s path. Why does the title emphasize the fans?
For Comeau, the fans are essential to the documentary’s point of view: “You really can’t tell the story of Simple Plan without telling the story of our fans.” He explained that the title looks back to the band members’ own beginnings as young fans going to punk shows in Montreal, before they found themselves on stage. Yes. Bouvier described The Kids in the Crowd (Music from the Documentary Soundtrack) as the band’s first official greatest-hits compilation. Alongside familiar tracks including “Welcome to My Life,” “Perfect,” “I’d Do Anything” and “I’m Just a Kid,” it includes “Nothing Changes,” a new song that Comeau said was inspired by making the film. He said the band wanted to release it with the documentary as a sign that Simple Plan remains active. Rock Sound · Rolling Stone en Español
