Maya’s jobs and caregiving hold the household together, but the film’s tenderness comes from seeing her husband Sundar and teenage son Debu as people with their own fears and perspectives—not simply as obstacles to her resilience.
What is Shadowbox about?
Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi’s debut fiction feature premiered at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival. Set in Barrackpore, it follows Maya, played by Tillotama Shome, as she moves between jobs and family responsibilities to keep food on the table and her son Debu, played by Sayan Karmakar, in school. Her husband Sundar, played by Chandan Bisht, is a former soldier from Uttarakhand who experiences severe anxiety. When he goes missing, the family’s precarious routine is thrown into crisis.

Cinema Express describes Sundar as suffering from PTSD and says his disappearance and a murder investigation bring the family’s situation to a head. That diagnostic language belongs to the publication’s account, not to a clinical frame the filmmakers claim for the film: Sahi says they did not want to make a clinical study of Sundar’s distress.
Why does the family’s persistence feel earned?
Maya’s effort is made of ordinary work
Maya’s persistence is not presented as a sudden triumph. It is visible in the daily, imperfect effort of juggling paid work, domestic needs, Debu’s education and her relationship with Sundar. Her labor organizes the story, but it does not make her the only person whose experience matters.

Debu and Sundar remain people, not plot devices
Sahi says Maya became the filmmakers’ natural viewpoint as they tried to understand a caregiver’s position, while also stressing that the story belongs to Debu and Sundar. That balance matters: Debu is not merely the future Maya is trying to protect, and Sundar is not merely a problem for her to solve. The family’s strain is felt across their different positions.
The inspiration is personal, not a claim of biography
Das has connected the film’s emotional questions to memories of her parents and her mother’s persistence in a difficult marriage. “While the love was very hard, I saw my mother stick to it like a rebellion,” she told The Hindu. She also said, “I wanted to understand where that hope, that resilience, that kindness comes from.” These are the director’s stated inspirations; the film is not presented as a literal retelling of her parents’ lives.

How does the film approach Sundar’s distress?
The directors’ emphasis is on empathy rather than diagnosis. Sahi says, “We didn’t want to take a clinical angle.” That choice keeps the family’s experience in view without asking the audience to reduce Sundar to a condition or treat his distress as a puzzle with a simple explanation. It also makes room for the effects of his absence on Maya and Debu without turning either of them into a judgment on him.
What do the titles and silences suggest?
According to the directors, Baksho Bondi evokes being caged, unable to express what one feels, or keeping it hidden. Sahi describes the phrase as something that could apply to all the characters. The English title, he says, draws on a military shadowbox used to display medals—an image made ironic by Sundar’s return home with trauma rather than medals. These are the filmmakers’ explanations of the titles, not a single prescribed interpretation.

The directors also chose not to spell out every part of the family’s past. Das says, “The choice to not spell out things was very deliberate.” The gaps invite viewers to interpret what remains unspoken instead of receiving a complete explanation for every wound or conflict.
How do Barrackpore and the bicycle shape the story?
Barrackpore is part of the film’s emotional texture, not just a location label. The directors say they lived there before filming and wanted the sound of neighbors and street arguments to make the setting feel inhabited. Sahi describes using a widescreen frame that keeps backgrounds visible, allowing the neighborhood and domestic spaces to register around the characters. As the story approaches a key conversation, the image narrows toward their faces: attention shifts from the material world surrounding the family to intimate emotional change.

Maya’s bicycle gives that movement a concrete form. In an interview with The Indian Express, Das describes it as an affordable means of transport used by many women in Barrackpore and as Maya’s companion between jobs. Sahi adds that she uses it as a shield in antagonistic conversations. In that account, the bicycle is both practical and expressive: it helps Maya move through her day and gives her a small measure of protection.
