Selling Sunset can feel scripted because its creator says the production deliberately gives the reality series the look and rhythm of scripted television. That does not establish that every line, relationship, showing, or sale is invented. The better-supported explanation is a blend of real estate and cast dynamics with carefully shaped scenes, polished visuals, music, and editing.
Why did Selling Sunset’s creator want it to look scripted?
Creator Adam DiVello has said the aim was to make the program look like a series despite its reality-TV format. In an interview with Distractify, which reported his comments to Variety, DiVello put it plainly: “We wanted to deliberately make it look like a series even though it’s full reality.” He also said he could spend about a week editing a single scene.

That approach helps explain the show’s unusually composed feel. A scene that might be brief or messy in ordinary life can be selected, arranged, and paced to play like a dramatic sequence. A week spent editing a scene is DiVello’s account of his process, not a measurement of every scene or season.
How do editing, music, and visual polish heighten the drama?
Editing shapes what viewers see
Editing determines which moments make the final cut, how long they last, and how they sit beside other scenes. Those choices can sharpen a disagreement or make a reaction seem more consequential without proving that the underlying exchange was scripted. DiVello has described the goal as intensifying what cast members appear to feel: “We’re going to exaggerate how you’re feeling, and for that, we can’t apologize,” he told Bustle.

Music and presentation signal a story
The show’s aspirational look and soundtrack also contribute to the impression of a drama. DiVello told TIME, “You try to make it fun and aspirational. It’s also dramatic, so we use the music to help tell those stories.” Music can direct attention toward tension or romance, while polished cinematography makes homes, clothes, and settings feel deliberately composed rather than incidental.
Are the cast given lines, or are conversations set up?
Executive producer Skyler Wakil has denied that producers hand cast members dialogue: “We don’t give them lines; we don’t tell them what to do,” he told Bustle. DiVello, however, has described production as setting up situations or sparking conversations. Those statements are not necessarily contradictory: producers can influence where and when people meet or what subjects come up without supplying exact lines.

Accounts from the cast and production are not uniform. Cosmopolitan reported cast members describing genuine relationships, alongside one cast member’s allegation that lines were fed. That allegation should be understood as an attributed account, not proof that all dialogue is written or that every cast member has the same experience.

The real-estate activity is not simply a fictional backdrop, but the way it appears on television can be shaped. Jason Oppenheim has said the brokerage sold properties presented as sold. At the same time, TIME noted that some showings appear staged for dramatic reasons. A real property or transaction can therefore coexist with a showing arranged, timed, or framed for a television scene; one does not establish that every on-screen event happened exactly as presented.

What “fake” gets right—and what it does not prove
Calling Selling Sunset “fake” captures the conspicuous production: planned settings and timing, heightened emotional framing, selective editing, music, and visual polish. But the available accounts do not support the broader claim that every person, relationship, line, or sale is fabricated. The most precise description is highly produced reality television: real-world material shaped into a coherent, aspirational drama.
