Sean Penn missed the March 15, 2026, Academy Awards while in Ukraine. He won Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, and the next day met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi later presented him with an “IronOscar,” a separate symbolic award made with metal from a railcar damaged by a Russian attack—not an Academy statuette.
Why Sean Penn was absent from the 2026 Oscars
Penn was in Ukraine when the 98th Academy Awards took place on March 15. He won Best Supporting Actor for playing Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another; Kieran Culkin accepted the award for him. It was Penn’s third acting Oscar, following wins for Mystic River and Milk. The Associated Press reported his win and absence on March 16: AP coverage.

Accepting the award, Culkin said: “He couldn’t be here tonight, or he didn’t want to.” That remark did not explain Penn’s reasons; reporting placed Penn in Kyiv the following day.
Where Penn went and what is known about the visit
Penn arrived in Kyiv on March 16 and met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A senior Ukrainian official told AFP, as quoted by Euronews, that the visit was personal and that Penn wanted to support Ukraine. That is the official’s characterization, rather than a detailed account from Penn of his private reasoning. Euronews reported the arrival and attribution.

Penn had an established connection to Ukraine before this trip. In 2022, he gave one of his Oscars to Zelenskyy, and he later co-directed the documentary Superpower, which follows Ukraine amid Russia’s full-scale invasion. The Kyiv Independent’s account of the timeline and Penn’s prior involvement is available here.
What the IronOscar is—and who presented it
On March 17, Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi presented Penn with the IronOscar. Variety reported that the object was made using metal from a railcar damaged by a Russian attack. It was a gesture from Ukrainian Railways, not a second competitive award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Pertsovskyi described the material in the video reported by Variety: “This is from a railcar that was damaged by the Russians. The metal survived, so it’s very special to us. It’s not golden, but it’s very real and from the bottom of our hearts.” The inscription on the object framed the salvaged steel as gratitude for Penn’s support of Ukraine. It reads: “This steel once carried millions of people away from war. Then a Russian missile came. We did not melt it into a weapon. We forged it into gratitude — for you. For your talent. For your courage to stand with Ukraine.” Variety’s March 19 report includes the presentation and inscription.
