Scott Patterson, who played Harry “Sully” Sullivan for the first three seasons of Sullivan’s Crossing, did not return for season 4. Patterson said he left because creative differences had become untenable; showrunner Roma Roth explained how the series continued Sully’s story off-screen and said a future appearance remained possible, not confirmed.
Why did Scott Patterson leave Sullivan’s Crossing?
Patterson attributed his departure to creative differences. In a statement to Deadline reproduced by TVLine, he said, “The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”
He also objected to the impression that the production had moved on from him or his character, saying, “It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite.” That is Patterson’s account of both his reason for leaving and how the departure was being characterized.
What did showrunner Roma Roth say about his absence?
Roth described the story’s continuity rather than offering the same explanation for Patterson’s departure. The season 3 finale sent Sully to Ireland with his girlfriend; Roth told Us Weekly that season 4 begins the following day, with Sully still overseas.

“While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative,” Roth said. The statement leaves a return open, but does not announce one.
In a later interview with The Canadian Press, Roth said, “So, we had to pick up on that storyline and we were in discussions with Scott to come back.” She also said she would welcome Sully’s return: “Yeah, I mean, why not? You know Sully was a very important character in the show.” These comments describe Roth’s account of the storyline and discussions; they do not establish a cast agreement or a confirmed future appearance. The Canadian Press report said season 4 had begun airing in Canada the previous month.

How does season 4 handle Sully’s absence?
The show leaves Sully’s Ireland storyline in place while shifting more attention to Maggie’s life. In a season-ending interview published July 10, 2026, Netflix Tudum described the season’s focus on Maggie and Cal’s relationship, the return of her former husband Liam, and questions about Maggie’s career. Roth called the move toward Maggie and Cal’s evolving relationship and Maggie’s new career a natural progression.

Season 4 status
The CW announced on July 16, 2025 that it had ordered ten episodes for season 4, with a 2026 debut planned. The network’s announcement is available from The CW Press. By the time of Roth’s July 2026 season-ending interview, the season had aired; it should not be described simply as upcoming.

Patterson said creative differences led him to decide he could not continue, and he disputed the idea that the production had moved on from him. Roth described the story’s handling of Sully, said discussions about Patterson returning took place, and left open a possible future appearance. Those accounts are not necessarily incompatible, but the public statements do not establish the full private history or resolve the disagreement. They also do not show that Patterson was fired, that Roth forced him out, or that he will return.
