Spoiler warning: This review reveals the major twist in season 1, episode 6.
Sugar begins as a polished Los Angeles noir: Colin Farrell plays a soft-spoken private investigator searching for a missing young woman amid Hollywood money, family secrets and criminal danger. Its hardboiled style is the pleasure—and the risk. In episode 6, the series reveals that John Sugar is an alien, abruptly changing the terms of the mystery. Whether that turn feels like bold genre play or a sour break with the show’s promise depends on how much you wanted the detective story it first appeared to be.
What is Sugar about?
John Sugar is an American private investigator in Los Angeles, hired to find Olivia Siegel, the missing granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. The case pulls him into the family’s secrets and a dangerous criminal world. Apple describes the series as a contemporary private-detective story; its first season premiered in 2024. Apple TV Press: Sugar
Before the science-fiction turn, the show delivers familiar neo-noir attractions: a mysterious investigator, wealthy clients, a missing-person case, old-Hollywood references and a city full of people with something to hide. Farrell gives Sugar a notably gentle, controlled presence rather than playing him as a hard-edged tough guy. TVLine’s Dave Nemetz called the series, “At its core, Sugar is hard-boiled film noir,” praising its retro sleuthing and Farrell’s charisma while noting that the mystery is lean. What is the twist in Sugar with Colin Farrell?
Spoiler: In season 1, episode 6, Sugar is beaten and stabbed during a confrontation involving crime boss Byron Stallings and his associates. Back at a motel, he injects himself. His eyes turn blue, then his skin changes color. The reveal is that John Sugar is an alien. TVLine’s episode 6 recap
This is more than a clue that the detective has an unusual background: it changes the series’ genre contract. The first episodes invite viewers to settle into a crime mystery; the reveal makes science fiction central to the premise. The question is not simply whether the twist is surprising, but whether the noir elements have prepared you to welcome that shift.

Does the alien reveal work?
The disagreement among critics captures the show’s gamble. TVLine saw a stylish, well-executed noir with an appealing lead. The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan, by contrast, argued that the mid-series reveal damaged the detective drama’s premise; her review headline called the series “a disaster,” which is her judgment rather than a neutral description. The Guardian’s April 5, 2024 review
For viewers, two questions help determine whether the turn feels earned. Do the story’s odd details read as fair foreshadowing, or as clues that only make sense after the fact? And does Sugar’s gentleness become more legible once he is understood as an outsider, or does the alien premise make Olivia’s disappearance feel like a setup for a different show? Those are matters of interpretation, but they get to the heart of why the same twist can feel inventive to one viewer and frustrating to another.

Is Sugar still a detective show—or is it science fiction?
It is both, but the balance changes. Season 1 starts by foregrounding the private-investigator case and noir atmosphere; after episode 6, the alien identity makes the science-fiction premise impossible to treat as a side detail. If you are deciding whether to watch, the choice comes down to your spoiler tolerance and your appetite for a major genre switch:
- Go in unspoiled if you want to experience the noir setup and judge the turn as the series presents it.
- Read the reveal first if a sudden move from detective mystery to science fiction would make you feel misled, or if the alien premise is what would persuade you to watch.
Is Sugar worth watching after the twist?
Season 2 offers a different version of the show, though it cannot retroactively make the first-season reveal work for every viewer. In his June 19, 2026 review, the Los Angeles Times’ Robert Lloyd described a lighter tone, less pronounced visual eccentricity and a story that leans more coherently into Sugar as an alien detective. That is one critic’s assessment, not a guarantee that the new direction resolves every objection. Los Angeles Times season 2 review
