Sami Zayn was a compelling choice to end Gunther’s championship run at WrestleMania XL—not because that judgment is universal, but because their matchup makes the title change feel like a story about an established force meeting a challenger audiences can root for. The distinction matters: Gunther later defeated Zayn in a separate title match on Raw on October 7, 2024.
Why Zayn was a compelling choice
The case for Zayn is a matter of wrestling storytelling, not an objective rule about who should win. A champion presented as difficult to overcome gives a challenger’s victory weight; an emotionally legible underdog gives viewers a reason to invest in the struggle. Zayn fits that role in the argument for the WrestleMania XL result: his win could register as a payoff to persistence rather than simply another change of champion.
That interpretation should not be mistaken for a documented explanation of WWE’s creative decision. The available evidence does not establish the full WrestleMania build or show that the company chose Zayn for this specific rationale. It is a case for why the result can work as a story, not a claim about what the decision-makers intended.
What the disagreement says—and what it does not
Fan responses to the booking were not unanimous: Cagematch’s listing includes comments both approving and criticizing the choice. That is evidence of disagreement among users who commented, not a representative survey or proof of a broader fan consensus. The “right person” question therefore remains a judgment call rather than a settled verdict.

Zayn’s WrestleMania XL victory and the October 7, 2024 Raw match are separate encounters. WWE’s official report says Gunther defeated Zayn by submission on Raw to retain the World Heavyweight Championship; the referee called for the bell while Gunther had Zayn in a Sleeper.
