Sabrina Carpenter said she made Man’s Best Friend so soon after Short n’ Sweet because she was still inspired to write—and saw no reason to wait years simply to follow a conventional album cycle. She described the record not as a scheduled immediate sequel, but as the result of songs that accumulated after the previous album was finished.
How soon did Man’s Best Friend follow Short n’ Sweet?
Short n’ Sweet arrived in August 2024. Universal Music Canada announced Man’s Best Friend on June 11, 2025, as Carpenter’s seventh studio album and the follow-up, with a release date of August 29, 2025. Apple Music lists that release date and records a 12-song standard edition and a 13-song bonus-track edition.

The short interval came after a major commercial success: Universal Music Canada said in its 2025 announcement that Short n’ Sweet had sold 10 million albums globally. That context may make a longer album campaign seem plausible, but it does not establish that success prompted the new record or that it delayed it.
Carpenter said she followed inspiration, not a fixed timetable
In a July 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, Carpenter said she could have extended the Short n’ Sweet era, but preferred making new music while she felt inspired. “If I really wanted to, I could have stretched out Short n’ Sweet much, much longer,” she said. Her question was, “Why would I wait three years just for the sake of waiting three years?”

Her point was not that every album should arrive quickly. She framed timing as a matter of what felt right to her: “It’s all about what feels right.” In that account, a three-year gap was not a rule she needed to follow.
The album emerged from writing after the previous one was finished
Carpenter described the process as gradual rather than as an immediate follow-up planned in advance. After Short n’ Sweet was wrapped, she kept writing with producer Jack Antonoff and songwriter Amy Allen without setting out with expectations for another album. The songs accumulated into Man’s Best Friend.

She has also described writing as a way to process what she was experiencing, not as a promise that every song would be released. In an August 2025 CBS News interview, she discussed that personal role of writing and the collaborative work behind the album. The distinction matters: creative momentum explains why she continued making songs, while the decision to shape and release them as an album was a separate step.
Earlier artists helped make an annual pace feel possible
Carpenter also pointed to the release habits of artists she admired. She recalled returning to favorite artists from her youth and noticing that some released albums every year. “They would release a 10-song album every year,” she told Rolling Stone. Her question was why contemporary artists should not be able to work at a similar pace.

MusicRadar also reported Carpenter’s comment that she had gone back to “some of my favourite artists growing up,” and quoted Antonoff describing the prior album’s creative groundwork: “The things we did on the last album – things that people really loved – were just the start of places we wanted to take it.” That suggests continuity in the collaborators’ creative direction, even as the new songs became a distinct album.

Carpenter’s public explanation centers on inspiration, continued songwriting, freedom from a prescribed wait, and the example of artists who released music more frequently. She has not said that Man’s Best Friend was conceived as a preplanned rapid sequel. The interviews document her stated creative reasons; they do not establish that business considerations played no part behind the scenes.
