Season 7 was planned as S.W.A.T.’s final season, so Alex Russell and Kenny Johnson moved from series-regular roles to recurring cast members and received character farewells. That plan changed when CBS renewed the show for season 8. The reporting explains why Jim Street and Dominique Luca left their regular roles; it does not establish that either actor personally chose to leave.
Why did Alex Russell and Kenny Johnson leave S.W.A.T.?
Their reduced roles were tied to the expectation that season 7 would end the series. On May 8, 2023, CBS reversed its cancellation of S.W.A.T. after season 6 and ordered a 13-episode seventh season as the show’s final run. CBS and Sony Pictures Television said the season would give the series and its characters closure. TheWrap reported the cancellation reversal and final-season order.
In February 2024, TVLine reported that Russell, who played Jim Street, and Johnson, who played Dominique Luca, would recur in season 7 rather than remain series regulars. Showrunner Andrew Dettmann said the writers wanted to give the characters focused farewells: “Looking at [Season 7] being the final 13 [episodes], we wanted to give everybody their proper curtain call.” TVLine’s report described the cast change and Dettmann’s explanation.
That account supports a production decision shaped by the show’s anticipated ending—not a claim that Russell or Johnson announced a personal decision to quit. The cited reporting also does not establish a budget-cut explanation.

How were Street and Luca written out?
Jim Street leaves to lead Long Beach SWAT
Street leaves the team to take a leadership role with the Long Beach SWAT team. His departure gives the character a new professional path rather than killing him off or suggesting that he leaves law enforcement.
Dominique Luca retires after an injury
Luca retires after a career-ending injury. His exit is presented as the consequence of what happened to the character, not as a statement about Johnson’s real-life career. Dettmann told TVLine that these goodbyes were devised while the production believed season 7 would be the end; he said either character could potentially appear again, but did not expect Russell or Johnson to return as series regulars in the near future at that time. TVLine covered the finale and the possibility of future appearances.

Was season 7 really the last season of S.W.A.T.?
No. CBS renewed S.W.A.T. for season 8 in April 2024, after the season 7 farewell plan was already in motion. Dettmann said the renewal did not substantially change how the finale had been shaped. So season 7 was intended to be the last season for Street and Luca as regular characters under the original plan, but it was not the show’s final season.
In its renewal announcement, CBS cited 6.1 million viewers and a No. 17 overall season-to-date ranking using Nielsen Most Current data. The network also reported 8.8 million viewers per episode with live-plus-35-day multiplatform viewing, up 11% year over year; CBS said that measure included Paramount+ and CBS TVE (CBS.com and the CBS app). These are figures published by CBS, not independently audited figures in the cited reporting. CBS’s renewal announcement provides its audience figures and season 8 news.

Are Street and Luca coming back for season 8?
The available statements establish only that a future appearance was possible, not that either character was confirmed to return for season 8. Dettmann’s comments about possible appearances and his expectation that Russell and Johnson would not return as series regulars were made in May 2024; they should not be treated as confirmation of either actor’s current contract status or of later appearances.
