What happened to Leon Vance?
Leon Vance, played by Rocky Carroll, dies in “All Good Things,” the 500th episode of NCIS. In the episode, Vance helps clear a petty officer accused of a crime and restore the agency before a corrupt agent shoots him, according to TVLine’s March 24, 2026 interview with Carroll.

The story also gives the milestone episode a larger consequence: Vance’s actions help NCIS survive a crisis, but he does not. Did Rocky Carroll try to change the decision?
Carroll’s initial response was surprise, not a sustained effort to overturn the plot. He said Binder brought him the story shortly before filming. When Carroll heard that Vance would save the agency and lose his life, he stopped Binder to clarify: “Back up to the part again: He saves the agency and loses his life?”

After hearing the pitch, Carroll said, “That’s a great story.” He later emphasized that he was not the catalyst for Vance’s death. The interview supports a startled reaction followed by creative acceptance—not a successful attempt to change the outcome. TVLine
Why did the show kill off Vance?
Binder framed the decision as a way to honor both Carroll and the character while giving a landmark episode meaningful stakes. Carroll recalled Binder saying, “I want this to be a tribute and a love letter to your character.”
Binder’s own explanation was that the team wanted to honor Carroll and his legacy on the show: “It is never easy to say goodbye to any of our characters, but we wanted to honor Rocky and his legacy on the show as best as we could — in this case, giving his life so his agency could live.” TV Insider

Vance’s death ends the character’s life in the story, but it does not establish that Carroll will never appear again. TVLine reported that Carroll expected to return to directing episodes and discussed the franchise’s use of flashbacks. That is not confirmation of a future acting appearance, so any return as Vance remains unconfirmed. TVLine
