He later described the job as overwhelming, but called the opportunity valuable. A 2019 account says he was let go after the show missed its usual election-year ratings bump; it does not establish that ratings were NBC’s confirmed reason for ending his tenure.
What happened during Rob Riggle’s SNL season?
Riggle joined Saturday Night Live in 2004 for the 2004–05 season. A contemporaneous Kansas Alumni profile recounts that he had auditioned unsuccessfully before returning to audition in 2004 and receiving a hiring call from producer Lorne Michaels.
In a 2019 interview with The Daily Beast, Riggle recalled being the only new male hire in a large cast: “The year I was hired, I was the only guy hired. The cast was massive. Fifteen people on the cast and I’m the only new guy.” That figure is his recollection in the interview, not an independently verified season roster count.
Why did Rob Riggle leave SNL after one season?
The Daily Beast reported that Riggle was let go after the program failed to get its usual election-year ratings bump in 2004. That is reported context, not a confirmed explanation from NBC: the available accounts do not document the network’s internal decision-making or provide audience and ratings data.
Riggle’s own account focuses on the strain of the job rather than a specific reason for his departure. He described SNL as his first show-business job and said the pace and pressure left him unsure what was funny by the end of the season. He told The Daily Beast: “It’s an unbelievable pace and pressure and I got to a point where I didn’t even know what was funny anymore by the end of the season.”
Was Rob Riggle fired from SNL?
The Daily Beast says he was let go after that one season. The cited coverage does not give further details about the decision or identify an official NBC statement, so it supports saying his tenure ended after one season—not assigning a more specific account of how the decision was made.

Riggle later joined The Daily Show as a correspondent. A 2014 Fast Company profile says he left SNL, moved his family to Los Angeles, then took a correspondent job in New York that led to a prolonged commute. His brief SNL run was one step in a career that continued beyond the show.
