Gere said living in Spain would bring Silva closer to her family, lifelong friends, and culture. He also spoke warmly about Spain’s lifestyle, food, scenery, and people. His explanation presented the move as a shared family choice: a chance for him to experience the place and community that were important to his wife.

The family moved to Madrid in November 2024, according to El País. Their interest in helping address homelessness in Spain was additional context during their time there; El País Semanal reported in May 2025 that the couple was focused on that work.

The headline’s present tense is misleading if read as breaking news. The move to Madrid happened in 2024, and the latest dated reporting here places Gere and his family back in the United States by October 2025. Silva’s November 2025 comments indicate continuing ties to Spain, but do not establish a current address or a permanent plan to live in either country.
Gere had also said he had not lived in California for about a quarter-century and had stayed in New York partly because he did not want to be far from his son. That history is separate from his stated reason for moving to Spain: to spend time in Silva’s world.
