McEntire’s words were a personal expression of grief in response to a song about cancer and the people who support one another through it—not a general statement about cancer outcomes. In the same report, she described her bond with Blackstock as “precious.” Parade’s Oct. 28 report covered the episode that aired the previous day.
Who was Brandon Blackstock to Reba McEntire?
Blackstock was the son of McEntire’s former husband, Narvel Blackstock. Though he was her stepson, McEntire said she loved and helped raise him, and referred to him as her “oldest son.” That phrasing reflects their close family relationship; it does not mean he was her biological son.

What is known about Brandon Blackstock’s death?
The Associated Press reported that Blackstock died of cancer at age 48. A representative for the Blackstock family said he had battled cancer for more than three years and died peacefully surrounded by family. The family requested privacy. These details were reported by the AP in its account of his death.
McEntire had paid tribute to him earlier
The Voice moment was not McEntire’s first public acknowledgment of Blackstock’s death. In an Aug. 12, 2025 tribute, she wrote: “Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God.” Parade reported that she also reflected on his legacy and the laughter he would leave with his family. The song behind the moment
Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” centers on standing by someone facing cancer. Aubrey Nicole’s performance brought that subject into the conversation, and McEntire connected the song to her own loss and to the comfort people can find in loved ones.
